Shipmates-
We "race" our boat with a very casual group on Wednesday nites and occasionally fly a spinnaker. With the 3/8" double-braid halyard and small/flat delrin sheave at the masthead, there is tremendous friction as we hoist and lower the sail. I'm not ready to have the mast unstepped to install the recommended crane, and wonder if these alternatives would work and be safe:
1 - replace the spinnaker halyard with 1/4" dyneema, splicing a polyester cover to the cockpit end of the halyard so the clutch will "grab" properly
2- attach a swivel block to the spinnaker halyard and use a smaller diameter line like dyneema as a temporary halyard
Any/all suggestions welcome!
