West Marine had the exact replacement for Hoop Dancer ~ 10 years ago. However, I expect it depends on hull number (or year of production), i.e. what ever was in the parts bin at the time.

I replaced mine with a standard marine grade toggle switch. That little key won't stop a boat thief.

AND I don't like the thought that I could be treading water behind the boat with the key in my pocket ;-)

Pat, I wanted to do this too as I leave the key in the ignition (can?t lose it or waste time finding it) and I can turn off the starter battery when not around. The switch I have is not a simple two wire. Do you have a source for your switch? What is your hull number?

Thanks,

Greg

I leave my key in the ignition all of the time, in case there is a dock emergency requiring my boat to be moved.

Security is a non-issue, in my opinion. I could bypass the ignition in five minutes with a screwdriver. A better reason is that it gives you a convenient way to save power by turning off the juice to your instruments.

It's kind of like the lock you have in the companionway. I had a huge bronze one once that I thought was secure. Then I lost the key. I went into the cockpit locker and got a hacksaw blade. Five minutes later, the lock was sawed in half. Most security measures only defeat crimes of convenience by lazy people.

Also, who in their right mind would steal a sailboat? It would take hours to flee the scene. Where would you hide it? The name on the hull would be a dead giveaway.

I have continued the prior owner’s habit of keeping the key on the raw water intake valve. Definitely hard to get to but also hard to forget to open that valve.

I’m day sailing and don’t have the mattress in the way.

Sailboats do get stolen. Not everyone is in their right mind! And for many boats it might be days or weeks before anyone noticed it was gone. But I agree with the sentiment about the effectiveness of locks. I used to keep our boat on a mooring where anyone with a small motorboat could tow it away, or break into the cabin to find the engine key.

BTW, I once accidentally put the wrong lock on the companionway where the key to that lock was inside the boat. I broke in through the steering access door into the aft cabin. No saw needed!

Locks her to keep honest people honest. If somebody wants in your boat, and Locke is not gonna stop them.
