Hello members with Perkins Perama M30s.

I need to replace the heat exchanger / exhaust manifold casting on the side of my engine. Turns out they are no longer made and finding one is turning out to be difficult. The Perkins part number for the casting is AR-750, but it sounds like a Volvo-Penta part 3580322 for their MD2030 will bolt right on.

Does anyone have a lead on a company that might have obscure parts for old engines? I’ve tried Parts-4-Engines in the UK and they don’t have one. If anyone has replaced their M30 recently and haven’t turned the old engine into a mooring anchor yet, I would even consider the part off an old engine.

Thanks,

Mark

Mark, I can't do a long response now, but check the thread started by Dan
Windsor on Sept 12.

Dan Winsor definitely will have the answers you need.  I cc"d him for this directly.  He just finished tackling this probkem and wound up using a Volvo heat exchanger tank because a new/used Perkins one was no where to be found. He also had to buy the Volvo exchanger tube to match because the Perkins one is slightly different in size.  You also will need the front and rear rubber boots to match the Volvo tank and tube.

I believe Dan got all the Volvo parts from Transatlantic Diesel  https://www.tadiesels.com/

Thanks, everybody. From what I’ve read here, and Dan Winsor’s post in September, it sounds like I’ll end up with the Volvo Penta casting. My mechanic has found one, but for $1,400! When we saw the Perkin’s unit listed on Parts4Engine’s website for $250 but showing “out of stock” we called and were told “never more”. This is still cheaper than repowering…

Shipoutletstore.com had the volvo unit new in box for me. You need to
understand that volvo redesigned the heat exchanger constructing it of cast
aluminum vs iron. Also changing the size of the tube stack. These changes
are present in the MD-2030 C and D models. If you are fortunate enough to
find one you will need new tubestack and boots.

I did our M30 heat exchanger in 2022. TAD (Trans Atlantic Diesel) supplied the part which was from a Northern Lights generator (not a Perkins part). I took the opportunity to replace the exhaust elbow, the two rubber end caps and a short piece of hose buried under the front of the exchanger (as well as clean out the heat exchanger tube itself - the original fitted perfectly in the NL exchanger body). I seem to remember having to buy some new fasteners because the exchanger housing is not exactly the same as original, and I also had to get some welding on the elbow but I can’t recall why.

Good luck!
