Can't comment on State Farm, but I just went through this. I got three
excellent quotes that were far below what I was paying. I highly recommend
getting a quote from the company Orlando recommended a while back--don't
recall the name but they advertise in Mainsheet and know the Catalina's
well. They were extremely competitive, but in the end I went with another
company that I got from an insurance agent that I found--they did a terrific
job in either telling me what they couldn't beat and doing a lot of leg
work. I believe everyone uses the same 6 or 7 underwriters for marine
insurance anyway--I ended up using a company called Sampson Insurance and
dealt with a gentleman by the name of Warren Hayes. Paying 45% *less* than
last year! Good luck..

Still would like to know others insurance rates, and area restrictions, if
any, as I believe the rates are a function of the sailing location.

Keep in mind, you must see an agent and every area is different.
My cost is $392 per year. In the 7 years I have had the insurance, it has only gone up $20.
To date, I have not made any claims so I cannot tell you how that will go. However, I have my Homeowners and Cars with St Farm and their claims service has been exceptional.
Hope this helps.

I suspect with that low of a premium and it being Allstate, it is probable
an "Actual Cash Value" policy, it's not an "Agreed Value' policy, which is
what you want..
Actual Cash Value – in the event of
a total loss, the market value,
determined by age and condition of
the boat at the time of the loss.
Boating industry reference
materials (NADA Book, BUC Used
Boat Guide, ABOS Marine Blue Book)
are often used to determine market
value.
Agreed Value - determined and
agreed upon by both owner and
insurance underwriter at the time
the policy is purchased. The
BoatU.S. Yacht and Bass Boat
policies are Agreed Value policies.
In case of loss of boat, Cas Value
only pays for the depreciated price
of the boat whereas Agreed Value is
just that, you and the insurance
company agree on a total for the
boat and that's what they pay off
Yes, the premium is higher but the
peace of mind is worth it...

Make sure you do an apples-for-apples comparison, price alone should not
be the reason for choosing one company over another..companies like
Allstate, State Farm, etc are not the best providers of MARINE
insurance....I have done a lot of research on this and take it from me,
scrutinize those policies and you'll see a big difference between an
Allstate and a Mariner's General policy for example
If you have a Cash Value policy and your 10 year old boat sinks, they will
pay off the DEPRECIATED value---you'll be getting back the money of a used
boat--good luck on buying a new boat with that...Agree Value--you agree on
$100K, your boat sinks in 10 years and that's what they pay you, $100K

My policy is a Helmsman Yacht policy written by Markel American
Insurance Company, represented locally (Annapolis) by International
Marine Insurance Services.
I currently pay $630 per year, of which $471 is for the boat.
My "Replacement Cost" is capped by my 'limit of insurance', which for
me is currently $65,000. I've got an old boat.
Looks like I need to do some thinking and some shopping.

Interestingly enough, my insurance I bought from Mariner's was also
underwritten by Markel
Although my boat will be 2 years old this August, they still insured it
for my original purchase price (I had my dealer install everything I
wanted and he rolled it into one bill), so I didn't lose any depreciated
value from Aug 2006 to when they insured it January 24, 2008.
Like I said though, read the fine print and shop around--with MARINE
underwriters

I gave in to the co-skipper and got the electric start model, press a
button is all, no rope pulling...all it requires is a small 12V motorcycle
battery, it's got a trickle charger to keep it charged up
