Is there a recommended chain size/length that this group favors?  We have 20-25 ft, not sure of gauge.  I envy other all-chain cruisers whose anchor line drops vertically into the water while our rode seemingly reaches to the horizon.  On the other hand, I don't want to handle/store any more chain than I need.  We do mostly coastal cruising so need to handle most conditions in a pinch.

What's the deadline; any interest in a solar panel install, or has
that been well covered?

I have to do an article for the Fall issue of Mainsheet. I'd like to
do it on a project of interest to our owners. If anyone has done the
cabin fixed view-port replacement (ok, windows,) and can offer some
pictures and notes, I can prepare the article. Or, how about some
other topic?
Help me out here guys...

I have replaced both of my fixed windows; ?AKA ?Deadlights
?
Catalina in Largo made them for me. ?You just provide your hull # and they research.
?
Much better option than aftermarket places, because they bevel the edges to fit our openings perfectly.
?
They also sell special caulk & I bought 3 tubes. ?My boat handyman installed & they are fabulous!
?
Photos? ? I never took any of the glass UNinstalled, so not much to see but a beautiful new deadlight.
?
Call Catalina for more info.
?
Hope this helps

I was wondering if there had been an article on configuring the port lazarett to make it more useful space. I'm a relatively new member so maybe this has been covered already. Just a thought.

I replaced all four of my motor mounts on my 2000 C320 two years ago. I bought the original equipment mounts from Yanmar (two years before I actually replaced them) and I think the cost was around $400. I did the work myself, and not being particularly handy, I probably spent 20 hours or maybe more for the whole project. I'm guessing someone who knows what they are doing could do it in less than half that time, maybe much less time. I found that carefully outlining the original mounts on the stringers with a Sharpie and counting the exact number of threads before loosening the bolts that attach the motor to the mounts made realigning the shaft much easier. I raised the motor from the motor mounts with the screw jack from my Honda (twice-one on each side) with a 1x6 piece of wood on top to distribute the weight across the bottom of the motor. It worked for me, but I'd likely pay someone to do it in the future. If your estimate was under $1,000, I would definitely pay so
meone to do it.

Hey everyone:

I need to replace my motor mounts on my Catalina 320, year - 2000. I received 1 estimate but it seemed high to me. Was wondering what I might expect in costs? Ideas?

Thank you! The quote was $1,000-$1,200 to replace 2 motor mounts. I know this is not something I can do or would want to try, so I would definitely hire a boat yard to do the work. I am scheduled for a haul-out and thought to have them do the work while out of the water. Replacing all 4 might be advisable.

Take care,

Out of curiosity did your marina tech explain what may of happened to to
damage the mounts?

I would like to avoid damaging mine if possible.

Thanks in advance, Tim

Patricia,
Absolutely replace all of them as age is an issue and the cost should not be that much more. Shaft and coupling alignment is critical anytime, but especially after engine mount replacement. We published an article on that subject in Mainsheet a couple of years ago explaining the process and it should be on the website.

Best Regards,
Chris

Given the discussion on replacing motor mounts I was wondering whether the decision to replace was based on visual inspection and observed degradation or whether there were some operational issues?
Replacement after how many engine hours or years of operation.

I would really like to see an article on Angus's suggestion on the port

Mine was based on a visual inspection by my mechanic.

I had a small fuel weep that dropped unseen onto the aft starboard mount and the rubber eventually disbonded from the metal

I replaced them with R&D mounts which are about one third the price and are constructed differently so the disbonding can't happen. They also cannot allow engine to drop in case if a knockdown

I replaced one at a time without removing the engine. To do this you need to remove the mount mounting lugs from the engine block. The engine is easily supported by remaining three mounts temporarily

Once they were all in place I did the shaft realignment process

Hope this helps

Hi. I googled R&D mounts and found this You Tube video and complaints that R&D mounts are not so good at low RPM.

No personal experience however.

We have 120 ft chain and 130 rode. As most of our anchorages in the Gulf and San Juan Islands require less than the 120. Sailed 49 days this summer so far and never used more than 100ft. We have a 15kg Rocna anchor that replaced the 10kg Lewmar that came with the boat. This anchor and chain has been fantastic.

Cheers,

I ditto what Greg has said here. I have 130' of 1/4" high tensile chain
and 200' of nylon rode. The chain fits the gypsy on the Maxwell500
windlass. I understand that one needs to go to the Maxwell 1000 now to
get a gypsy.

Does anyone know if the VW1000 fits our C320's without major
modification to the mounting areas? This upgrade has been on my radar
but I shelved it when I found out you couldn't buy the retrofit kit for
the 500 any longer.

When our old Maxwell 500 died, we replaced the 22 lb Bruce with a 15 kg
Rocna (which we love), installed (with effort) a Maxwell VW 10-8 windlass
and upgraded to 50 ft of 5/16" chain and 275 ft of 9/16 triple strand
nylon; both grab on the Maxwell VW 10-8 chain teeth. We cruise up in BC
(Desolation Sound, etc) and often have to anchor in 40-50 ft or more, but
even in shallower depths we put out all the chain and about 15 ft of rope
as shock absorber and then slide an 8 lb kellet ball 12 ft down the rope
for better catenary and so we don't trip on the line when the boat swings.

Along these lines, has anyone read a good analysis of what is recommended
scope for all-chain rodes? I'd think it's less than 5:1, but a friend dove
on an all chain set-up in noticeable but not strong winds and all the chain
was off the bottom, which I'd think negates some of the advantage of all
chain.
