Hi all,

Question on the water pressure/ pump.
Our boat is still fairly new to us. 1999 C320. filled water tanks prior to
launch. Someone mentioned we need to pressurize the water? did not do
that/ know how to do that. Now when I turn on water pressure on panel,
water immediately comes out of faucet in galley. cannot stop it by
twisting faucet knob. Wonder if we broke something in the faucet or
something else? appreciate any input!

Sounds like the wrong type of pump! It should have an extra wire loop. The pump is then activated ONLY when either faucet is turned "on."
Pressurizing only applies if the system includes an accumulator tank.
Hope this helps!

Sounds like either the faucet is broken (bad washer)) or not being operated properly. With faucet closed, water shouldn’t come out even if pump is running

I have a later model so may be different. Water flows from the tanks by gravity to the pump which is on the port side under a board supporting the aft cabin mattress. The pump is powered by a switch on the electrical panel. When powered it pumps for a fraction of a second until there is pressure in the lines. When a faucet is opened the pump is initiated and runs until the faucet is closed. There is no pressure tank, so no water if the pump is not switched on.

Louis-

The original domestic water pump has a pressure switch in it. The pump is
an on demand pump that will begin pumping water as soon as a faucet is
turned on and will stop pumping as soon as a faucet is shut off. If the
faucet keeps running when the faucet is turned of, that’s a problem with
your faucet not your pump. Are you positive you are turning it off? I
know it sounds counterintuitive but try all four combinations of both fully
clockwise (off for most normal valves), both fully counter clockwise, one
clockwise one counterclockwise and finally one counterclockwise and the
other clockwise.

Some C320 owners have installed a small pressure tank on their 320.
Depending on the size of the tank it will take a little longer for the pump
to build pressure as this tank fills. These little tanks are called
accumulators. I don’t know why they aren’t called pressure tanks. I’m
sure you could ask google.

Finally, a common practice of 320 owners is to bypass and drain the hot
water tank prior to winterizing. In the spring this means you have to
fill the hot water heater prior to turning it on. If you turn it on without
water it will most likely burn out the element. Once the cold water side
is flushed and the pump cuts off de winterizing the hot side involves
undoing the bypass and then running the pump until it fills the hot water
tank. This involves opening the hot side of the faucet and about a minute
or two of hissing and gurgling. Perhaps that is what you were being told
to "pressurize". Once the system is up and running you should not have to
do this again. When you arrive at the boat and turn on the pump it might
cycle for a brief moment but that’s it. If the pump cycles in the middle
of the night… you have a water leak somewhere in your domestic water
system…or a dripping faucet.

Hope this helps

I have often had to do the four position experiment to successfully shut off the galley sink! It's not very intuitive.

They sure aren’t. Here’s an even better question…why isn’t everyone
replacing that ridiculous water wasting galley faucet with a modern one?
It’s literally a 2 hour job tops and then no more fiddling with two knobs
to avoid scalding yourself while you waste water at anchor. Installing a
pullout sprayer faucet was literally the first "boat project" we did.
Total game changer.

I have a wonderful kitchen faucet even better than at home. Single lever spay or straight run on a head with hose, sits in the base. It is not marine--just regular faucet (inexpensive). It iss still going after 20 years so the marine environment has not hurt it. Not like the marine faucet in the head. I have replaced it once (very expensive) and its not working well now. I am looking for a regular household faucet.

I am often confused early in the season about which way the kitchen faucet knobs turn on/off. It is not obvious or "standard " to me. I leave the valves open when I blow my system out by compressed air for winterization. So, when I fill my tanks and initially turn my pump on ti start flow again, I have to quickly experiment about what direction to turn the knobs off.

Dave, my memory trick is, toward the sink= open, away from sink = closed.
I'm referring to the top arms of the handles.
Does that make sense?

Ok Troy has convinced me to tear out the original faucet on WindSwept and install a new one with all of the features of the one we have at home. Does anyone remember what diameter the hole is in the counter? I would like to avoid enlarging it if possible.

I'm in too. If anyone beats me to it, can you send the hole diameter as I hope to not have to enlarge the hole as well.

Dan Winsor is correct on my 1994 boat's kitchen sink faucet.  Cold water handle/knob on right side is off turning counter-clockwise. Hot water on the left is off clockwise. So, as Dan said, think of the knobs fins turning down into the sink basin to turn off the water.
So Albert .... sorry but not "righty tighty, lefty loosy".

Imagine each of the knobs is instead a faucet handle.  You would pull
the handles toward you to turn on, push away to turn off.  Just turn the
knobs the same direction.

Just the opposite with mine Greg. If thinking the knobs are handles, then pulling toward me (down into the sink basin) is "off" for both ..... not "on". I have no reason to believe my faucets are not original. I just left my boat and checked this.

All

If you find that the faucet you love needs a slightly larger hole size have
no fear. The counter material is similar to Corian which is easily
worked. Just buy a decent rotary rasp bit at the same place you get your
faucet and use a handheld drill to widen the hole. Only takes a few
minutes and as long as you go in a generally even circular motion all will
be fine.

Pro tip: you will probably find cheap rasps that cost something like $5 and
more expensive ones (usually carbide) that cost probably $15. This isn’t
the time to save $10, get the carbide bit it will come in handy when you
get around to replacing that ridiculously small holding tank thru hull vent
as well as so many other ‘how do I make this hole bigger' escapades.

Troy

I quickly widened the hole for my holding tank thruhull vent with my dremel and a cutting bit to install a real 3/4" open vent fitting. I bedded it with butyl rubber. I think this was a good move. I then installed new 3/4 " ID vent hose to the tank.

Replacing that Grohe faucet sounds like a great plan. The faucet has both
clockwise and counter-clockwise valves. Seems like I'm always turning one
the wrong way, on when I want off and off when I want on...What make of a
single lever, pull out spray faucet have folks used? We have Kohler
fixtures in the house, and maybe one Delta.

Thanks,
Tony

Sara,

I removed the stock galley sink faucet today. The hole in the countertop was 1-3/16 inch in diameter. I think I may have to enlarge the hole slightly for the faucet I selected, a Moen. Not sure as I have not tried to install it yet.
