As a new owner I really want to upgrade the galley faucet. At first
glance under the sink it seems almost impossible to reach up to the old
faucet in order to remove it. I can't be the first one to do this ???

Kim,

The cabinet is easily removed. On my 1994, at least, you simply remove the
drawers and then remove about six screws. Then you can set the “face” of
the cabinet aside and have all the access you need. I recently removed my
hot water heater in this manner.

Good luck,

Piece of cake…sorta.

Remove the entire sink base cabinet. Start by removing all the drawers,
there should be a little wooden toggle at the back of each drawer. With
the drawers removed it is much easier to remove the base cabinet. Just
remove the six screws from the frame and pull the whole cabinet out. Now
you have access to the faucet bolts which might at first still seem a
little intimidating (perhaps this is the part you meant). The item that
will set you free here is called a basin wrench and you can buy one for
relatively few dollars at any home improvement store. Easy to use once you
get the hang of it.

Also…you don’t need a 'marine' faucet. What you need is a faucet from Home
Depot or Lowe’s that has a single handle so you are not wasting water
finding the right temperature. You may need to slightly resize the hole a
little bigger, this is easily done with a cordless drill and a grinding
stone.

This was one of the very first upgrades we did on Hull #514, I think it
took me more time to make three trips to the home improvement store than to
actually do the upgrade. If you plan ahead on getting the right adapters
to adapt the new faucet fittings to the whale tubing you can probably cut
those back and forth trips out of the equation.

Good Luck

While doing this project, we also added a soap dispenser that can be refilled from the top to the right of the faucet.
We just used a standard Moen or Delta (can't remember) faucet that also pulls out.

As mentioned, the basin wrench from home depot makes it so much easier to reach up and loosen the old one and tighten the connections for the new faucet. Ie: slightly less R-rated project language.

I just added a couple galley pics to my owners gallery in a sub album
called Galley just to give an idea of what it will look like, not that it’s
a big surprise LOL.

Jeff, question for you. If no knuckles are bleeding, no additional trips
to the store are required, and no profanity is used….do you wonder what you
messed up? Asking for a friend.

No more difficult then replacing a kitchen sink faucet at home.
Remove the 3 drawers from the cabinet frame assembly.
Remove the 6 wood screws from the cabinet frame assembly’s face.
Pull the one piece wood cabinet frame assembly out from underneath the sink.
Remove actuator or any items attached to the frame assembly.
Set the one piece wood frame assembly forward on the cabinet sole for temporary storage.
Plenty of room for the cabinet & now underneath the double sink.
Easy to reach all tubing, drain, water heater parts underneath.
Attach shop lamp to see what’s what underneath, cheap mirror to look up if needed.
I remove the cabinet assembly for winterize & leave it out till spring.
Easy in & out.
Replace the faucet with same size holes as existing.
Stainless steel difficult to drill or ream.
On my boat 15 MM Whale fitting easy no drip fit on tubing.

I replaced the faucet on my boat with a single tap Moen I bought at Home Depot. Removal of the cabinetry has been well described here and if this is done access is quite good. If you’re at all handy this is an easy job. Make sure you have plumbers tape for joining the water hoses. Have a good look at your existing set up and plan what you need to do.

For sure I'd have missed something. If I come home from doing boat projects without band-aids on my head and arms, my wife will assume I've been doing the Boatyard Mayor thing and visiting everyone instead of working. LOL!

FWIW I was able to find replacement valve stems online and maintain ours without needing replacement.

I added a final set of pics I took of #809 Woodbine II's interior just prior to handing over the keys in July after sailing it for 20 years.

This shows the faucet we picked plus the soap dispenser:

I told the new owners that I expected them to keep it in pristine condition or I'd come knocking. LOL!
