With the recent storms in the bay area, our pedestal cover seems to have
flown off the boat. This was a velcro version.
I guess there are new covers with zippers on the market, I found this one
for instance:
http://shop.trailersailor.com/detail.htm?fno=20&group=144

I was wondering if it matters what year your Catalina is? Ours is 1995. I
believe the newer versions have different pedestals?
I could also go to a local canvas shop and get one custom made. Does
Catalina sell these directly?
Any other recommended shops?

Thanks for any input!

What Bay Area do you mean? If you mean San Francisco then where is your
boat? There are several good canvas makers and sail makers all over the
area and they do brilliant custom work. I can recommend a few if you are on
the Peninsula side of the Bay.

Adam, we're in your marina, Brisbane. Yes, SanFran bay area. I know a good
canvas shop in Alameda,
but they would prob have to come down to the boat to measure which is a bit
out of the way for them..
If you know of any closer by, please do let us know.

Thanks, Koen

Dear 320 Group,

We currently have a Catalina 28 and are planning to move up to a 320 in the
near future. Our immediate program is to charter a 320 for a cruise in
Florida in late March to make sure it suits us as we think it will.
Following which, we will be actively searching for a boat, probably 2000 to
2005.

Some of the items on our wish list include reverse cycle AC/heat, in mast
furling, and, with luck, innerspring mattress. Oh, yeah, we live in the St.
Louis, MO, area. Due to transp. costs, the left coast is probably out of
our range.

If any of you know of a boat that may be available, we would like to hear
from you. Thanks so much.

When you get the new cover make sure the fabricator adds a strap at the
lower part of the cover to attach it to the pedestal. If the zipper or
Velcro fastener becomes detached during high winds, the strap will keep the
cover from taking a swim.

I have a 2003 C320 with OEM pedestal cover that has a Velcro strip to close
the cover. The cover is fairly tight as long as the Velcro stays connected.
If the Velcro becomes detached, the cover would be history. One of the
first things I did after commissioning was to sew in a nylon strap at the
bottom of the cover which positively attaches each side of the cover under
the pedestal. This helps keep the Velcro connected and if that breaks loose
the cover cannot leave the boat.

While you are at it, rig up a short rope to wrap around the furling genoa
when at the slip so the genoa doesn't also unwrap in high winds and cause
havoc and possible damage to your boat or a neighbor's.

Thanks Robert, I'll keep that in mind. Looks like I can get a replacement
cover from Jon.
Can you send me a pic of your modifications to the cover?

I'd also suggest that they cut it slightly higher than cockpit floor level.

Mine touches the cockpit floor. Rain water runs into it (along with the dirt
it carries) and collects.

The bottom edge of the cover gets pretty dirty, and also the deck where it
sits. When I raise it up an inch or two, the deck and cover stay cleaner.

On 2001 #851 we replaced the velcro with a zipper and it works very well.
Our velcro lost its stickiness and wouldn't secure properly

Don't forget to check your local dealer, St Louis Sailing. We just bought a
new 320 from them (all the features you name) and were pleased with their
work. Heading for our first race (ever) this morning. If I don't win, I
reserve the right to retract my compliment.

Thanks, John. Have fun sailing. We won't get out for another 2 1/2 weeks
when we charter the 320 in Florida!! Re. Sailing Center, we would love to,
but Bob and I just don't want to spend that much money at this point - too
close to retirement with a more limited income.

There's a 2006 320 for sale at Harve de Grace, MD, for $114,900 that I am
intrigued with. Bob thinks there's a "hitch" because the price is quite
reasonable for a very loaded (even custom sheets), nearly new one. I
wonder...

Sail Annapolis has a 2000 for about $90K that looks pretty good as well.
This is where we purchased our C28mkII and our C320.

Why not ask Tidewater why the boat is for sale? Perhaps the owner moved up
and it's a trade. That could account for the reasonable asking price.

Much as we liked ort 28, the 320 is wonderful for us and two standard
poodles.

Barb and Bob

I just read the specs for this boat. It has everything anyone would want in
a C320. Negotiate like crazy and go for it. The only thing missing is a
satellite radio, that can be installed for a few bucks
