Similar problem here but turned out to be the servo cone and gear were
glazed. Brought the transmission home and tore it down, lapped the cone
and everything seems great now. I was hoping for linkage or cable issues
but no joy. During the process I also noticed that my damper plate is
probably getting long in the tooth as well as all the cables. No crime for
a 28 year old boat. The engine speed control has always felt a tad sticky
to me as well. I've been putting that maintenance off for a long time
because once you open up that pedestal and stare inside, there are tons of
other maintenance items to get after (wheel brake, needle bearing, new
steering chain?, check all cables on the quadrant, etc. etc.) the snowball
builds momentum quite quickly.
Good luck, let us know how you make out.
