I'm about to change the transmission gear oil on my Yanmar 3GM30F
(Japan) diesel. I changed the crankcase oil before haulout last fall
with Shell Rotella T 15W40. The Yanmar Operators Manual says to use the
same oil for the gear case as the crankcase. However, my PO left a
quart of CD 30 oil labeled "For Transmission" and a Yanmar (Japan)
manual "Maintenance of Pleasureboat Diesel Engine - GM Series" aboard
specifies CD 10W15 for engine and CD 30 for gear oil. Since Believe's
engine is the Japan version, I'm leaning toward the CD 30 oil. Make sense?

Not at the boat but I seem to remember that the recommended out is stamped on the id plate. Something like 30w

Hi Daryl,
Based on your hull number I believe you have the Euro engine. Either will work fine per Yanmar. I used 15w 40 in both my engine and Tranny on my 320. I happen to use straight 30 on my current YM30.
I would go with whichever is already in there. If not sure, 15w is easier since you already have it for the engine.
Typically 15 40 is recommended for colder climates...

I use Rotella T 15-40 for my 3GM30F engine and 30-weight oil for the Kanzaki transmission.

Over the years, Yanmar has changed the spec for engine lube between 30W and
15W40 but has never varied from 30W for the trans. I used to find it easier
when I only had to store one weight but I personally believe that the 15W40
is better for the engine.

Those of you changing the tranny oil once a year are engaging in unnecessary time and effort. The engine manual calls for a transmission oil change every 150hr, unless the engine is new then after the first 50hr and every 150hr after that. There is really no advantage to changing lubricants more often than the manufacturer's recommendation; unless of course the lubricant has become contaminated somehow. The recommended lubricant for the transmission is SAE30 engine oil.cheersJohnM1999#574

To keep with the thread of Transmission.

What paint do you use on the dip stick so you can see the oil level?

The stick is also hard to read as to where the oil level should be at?

Suggestions?

I was always concerned with the paint getting into the Tranny so I use a piece of blue painters tape wrapped at the fill line. Once the very bottom of the tape looks wet I know I'm full. Remove tape and done....

I was checking my transmission oil today and the dipstick has a mark about 1/4" from the bottom and no other marks. Is this the fill line, doesn't seem like a lot. Also, how much oil does the manual call out for?

I have always put White epoxy paint on the stick and let it thoroughly dry.
It makes it very easy to read the fluid level.

The transmission is filled with Type AFT or DEXRON II transmission fluid at
the factory during the engine load test.

I followed this thread with interest and came to the same conclusion that John and others have; the trans spec is for SAE 30 oil. My engine manual and the name plate on the trans both say SAE 20/30 HD. The name plate also says Oil QTY 0.6 litres while the manual mentions both 0.3 L and Total effective 0.6 L (rake angle 8 deg)

All this discussion prompted me to change the oil (the level had been checked periodical and was always at correct level) and while I did extract 0.3 litres almost exactly, what I extracted looked like ATF (Auto Trans Fluid) Thin and red in colour. The trans has been working fine as far as I could tell.

So my first stop for advice is here at this group and next will be the local Yanmar Marine dealer.

With no advice my plan would be to fill it up with SAE 30 run the trans a bit at dock in forward and reverse and then suck that out and refill with SAE 30 and consider the oil changed.

I believe the engine has about 750 hours on it (according to the hour meter) and I have no idea when the last trans oil change was done but it was before 540 hrs when we got the boat.

Your advise welcome

regards

Hi Ken.

Yes it did.
In my case however I needed to "dig it out" from spam.
I think Gmail places anything from aol or yahoo into spam folder.

It didn't come to my in box or get routed to spam. I just see the response from Marek.
I would agree with your plan. The yput that info on the tranny for a reason I guess. From the factory my Kanzaki was filled with oil not ATF. A third of a quart fills mine.

The local Yanmar dealer has said that way back Yanmar used ATF but now have settled on HD 30. He also said that Volvo sail drives have changed between ATF, HD 30 and multi grade over the years for reason he did not know.

He suggested I do as I planned, add HD 30; run; change out and refill with HD 30.

I will try and update this thread if there is anything further worthy of report.

Jerry,
Some systems detect duplicate posts and don't forward them on to you. Aol can be 'picky' about mailing lists.

You can tell if your post made it by looking in our Google group archive.

TO UPDATE

So I added about 333ml HD 30 to trans and ran it and then withdrew that and found a mix of ATF and HD 30. Was it aprox. 50/50?? Probably as the manual says there is an effective volume of 0.6 litres. The withdrawn mixture colour was reddish, as ATF.

I then withdrew again about 1/3 litre that was less red and added 1/3 litre HD 30 so now mix at 25 % ATF and ran trans. I then did another change so now mixture at approx 12.5%. Colour now looking more like HD 30. I will do 3 more changes given the value of oil compared to the value of a Trans bringing the mix to 1.5% ATF and then resume the recommended schedule of 150 hrs.
