Hi all,

We had our boat launched this week and the marina called, said they went to
start the engine and raw water pump was leaking - said we needed a new
one. A brief search online and I saw everything from "they should never
fail" to "they last 5 years." The boat is a 99 that we bought last year.
Was well maintained, previous owner kept records of impeller changes and
engine maintenance. Wondering if there is anything in operating the engine
or maintenance that wasn't done which lead to the failure or just wear and
tear. Never replaced as far as I can tell.

The bearing seals fail periodically. You can replace them, but a new unit is less than $200, if I remember correctly. Simple to change out.

Mine went (2005 1400 hrs ) with a leaky seat. I replaced it for about $350 and rebuilt the old one as a spare (kit was $45).

I have a 2000 and my raw water pump has been replaced twice, once by the PO and once by me. When it was my turn, I was starting the engine to head to the fuel dock and heard a clank and high pitched whirl sound from down below. Immediately shut off the engine and upon inspection, the pump had frozen.

They are not that expensive and given what they do to protect the engine, it's well worth the replacement cost. Also, not hard to replace. I was done in a few hours.

I replaced my raw water pump in 2023 on a 2000 model 320, so mine
lasted 23 years. I have been good about annual replacement of the
impeller.

Lou-
What engine ... Yanmar right?
Not sure I have correct engine model but check here for new pump or rebuild kit. https://parts4engines.com/en-us/collections/yanmar-2gm20-parts
If I got the wrong engine,  go to their menu to pick the correct one. This company is great.

thanks all. I actually had the yard do the replacement. not cheap but I
don't have that much time. managed winterizing and otherwise getting the
boat in shape, wash, wax, sails, water system, etc. for the spring.
just wanted to confirm this happens to a 25 yr. old boat. engine with 2130
hrs on it.

I just went through rebuilding my 3YM30 raw water pump. I used this video
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ciqP9ItOGsg Pretty straight forward and as
he mentions, the bearings are very cheap and my local Yanmar parts place
had the seals I needed. You should consider rebuilding your old one as a
spare. My boat is a 2006 with 1100 hours and the back seal was leaking.

Hi Lou: My raw water pump (1999 C320 "Getting Away" #617) started a very
slow drip last season. Turns out the shaft seal had just worn and began
leaking . Yanmar dealer said that it's not unusual and that my 24+ year
use was impressive. I bought a new pump, very easy install and recycled
the old one. Just launched and everything is fine. Your marina folks did
well.

On Windwalker a year 2000 boat, we found that we had to replace the pump every 10 years. I think it is very prudent to have a new pump on your engine and one that you rebuilt as a spare.

You should know how to change it. One time plastic baggie got sucked into the system. We were out the Pacific Ocean 10 miles from land. I had to go in and change the pump then. You should think through what you would have to do to change the pump before this happens.

Best regards
Dick Walker
