Sorry to bring up the portlight issue again, but after reading through the
older threads I have a question. I have a 1997 with the split frames and I
made the repairs suggested in the other threads by re-caulking the gaps at
the beginning of the season. This seamed to work and fixed the issue (
thanks to everyone who posted the fix ). However, this nor'easter were
having has exposed that one of the portlights has refused to get with the
program and is leaking a lot. Based on the amount of water coming in, I'm
guessing that the black gasket around the window opening is the culprit.

So, my question is - Catalina Direct says that their replacement gasket
only works with the newer ports. Is there another source? Can I find
something suitable from the hardware store? Also, I believe a few people
mentioned that replacing this is a pain. Can someone elaborate?

As always, I appreciate the help.

Thanks.

Tim

Lewmar technical support should be able to help here. On their website, they list spares for the old standard portlight (which is what I suspect you have) but not sure. They have an online store and also ways of finding a local parts rep. But here's the link to their spares page...

If you really think it's the black gasket that is leaking, first try Armour
All wipes to thoroughly clean the gasket. Supposedly, the Armour All makes
the gasket swell and not leak. I clean my gaskets 2-3 times per year with
this stuff and have never had a leak.

Jeff is right, I got replacement gaskets through Lewmar. I would try the Armor All trick first as the replacement is a royal pain. First you must get every last bit of silicone out of the narrow channel. Tried every possible trick, but still took me literally hours per port. Next the gaskets need to be stretched and locked into the channel. Problem is they want to pull away while the silicone is setting. One of the most frustrating boat projects I've ever done...

Amen to the Armour All treatment. Clean the window edges too. Grime there
also seems to cause leaks.

You can use 8mm or equivalent neoprene cord, glued into the corner of the frame with any suitable marine adhesive sealant. Csts about $2, takes 10 minutes and whilst it only lasts for about 2 years its so quick and easy to replace compared to the time and effort replacing the proper Lewmar seals.
Also check the O-rings in the latches as these are a major source of leakage

I agree. The seal needs to be CLEAN and pliant. I had one leak but after a good clean and some rubber oil it worked fine.

Tim: I got replacement gaskets from Downwind Marine in San Diego:

They are a pain to install, but they've worked well on my boat for about 5 years. Also, check the O-rings, which frequently leak. You can get replacements at Ace Hardware.
