Hey everyone:

I need to replace my motor mounts on my Catalina 320, year - 2000. I received 1 estimate but it seemed high to me. Was wondering what I might expect in costs? Ideas?

I replaced all four of my motor mounts on my 2000 C320 two years ago. I bought the original equipment mounts from Yanmar (two years before I actually replaced them) and I think the cost was around $400. I did the work myself, and not being particularly handy, I probably spent 20 hours or maybe more for the whole project. I'm guessing someone who knows what they are doing could do it in less than half that time, maybe much less time. I found that carefully outlining the original mounts on the stringers with a Sharpie and counting the exact number of threads before loosening the bolts that attach the motor to the mounts made realigning the shaft much easier. I raised the motor from the motor mounts with the screw jack from my Honda (twice-one on each side) with a 1x6 piece of wood on top to distribute the weight across the bottom of the motor. It worked for me, but I'd likely pay someone to do it in the future. If your estimate was under $1,000, I would definitely pay someone to do it.

Thank you! The quote was $1,000-$1,200 to replace 2 motor mounts. I know this is not something I can do or would want to try, so I would definitely hire a boat yard to do the work. I am scheduled for a haul-out and thought to have them do the work while out of the water. Replacing all 4 might be advisable.

Take care,

Good morning group,

Out of curiosity did your marina tech explain what may of happened to to
damage the mounts?

I would like to avoid damaging mine if possible.

Thanks in advance, Tim

Patricia,
Absolutely replace all of them as age is an issue and the cost should not be that much more. Shaft and coupling alignment is critical anytime, but especially after engine mount replacement. We published an article on that subject in Mainsheet a couple of years ago explaining the process and it should be on the website.

Best Regards,
Chris

Given the discussion on replacing motor mounts I was wondering whether the decision to replace was based on visual inspection and observed degradation or whether there were some operational issues?
Replacement after how many engine hours or years of operation.

Mine was based on a visual inspection by my mechanic.

I had a small fuel weep that dropped unseen onto the aft starboard mount and the rubber eventually disbonded from the metal

I replaced them with R&D mounts which are about one third the price and are constructed differently so the disbonding can't happen. They also cannot allow engine to drop in case if a knockdown

I replaced one at a time without removing the engine. To do this you need to remove the mount mounting lugs from the engine block. The engine is easily supported by remaining three mounts temporarily

Once they were all in place I did the shaft realignment process

Hope this helps

Hi. I googled R&D mounts and found this You Tube video and complaints that R&D mounts are not so good at low RPM.

No personal experience however.

You should align the propeller shaft after you do that. This alignment should take place after you are back in the water and fully rigged and stabilized.
