All,

I have finally replaced all seven of the original Lewmar portlights on our
boat and wondered if anyone wants one (or all) of the old ones. These are
two-piece frames with the sealer in between the upper and lower aluminum
frame halves. Lenses, frames, backing plates and interior plastic
surrounds are all included. Lenses, hinges, closures, etc are in decent
shape but keep in mind they are now about 25 years old. I have not taken
any time to clean up any remaining butyl sealant and I do not have all
mounting screws but will send as many as I can with each portlight.

I have a hard time throwing anything away but just do not have the room any
longer. I will send them to you for free if you will pick up the
shipping. If you are interested, let me know and I will get an idea on
best shipping methods.

Alternately, if someone knows of a worthy group or organization that could
use these, please let me know.

Thanks,

Frank Ross

Just wondering what you replaced
your old Lewmars with? I have the same old standard, size 1 Lewmars on my boat, Hull #644 and I’m exasperated with the ongoing leak problems. I removed them this fall and reseated them with Butyl rubber, changed the gaskets and replaced all then O-rings but I still have leaks around the gasket plexiglass contact
Points. I thought just to replace the four Portlights with the new standard Lewmars

John,

I replaced with the new style Lewmars. These are a much improved design
with only one frame seam (at mid bottom) and no through holes in the lens
for either hinges or closures. I tried the three in the aft stateroom
first and after those worked so well, I did the four in the salon the next
year.

Like you, I tried everything on the old ones, rebedding with butyl,
replacing the lens gaskets, replacing closing dog o-rings, carefully
recaulking the frame side seals. Even after all that work, they still
leaked. Grrrrr.

You can find the new ones online at less than $200 (e.g. Defender 1st
price). Replacing all seven was an expensive proposition but breaking the
project in two helped. But no more leaks (at least from the portlights) is
a worthwhile payoff, IMHO. Can't see that ever happening (at least on my
boat) with the originals.

Same story here. After reading all the mixed reviews on trying to r and r
the old port lights we just replaced all four salon port lights with brand
new ones. We used bed it butyl tape.

I used Captain Tolley's leak seal http://www.captaintolley.com/ and I have no leaks on my #351, 1996. Also filled it the black gap between upper and lower two piece aluminum frame with silicone. I never removed, just cleaned, went around all fittings, and wiped off excess.
Used on my chainplates also.

Traces and fills hairline cracks. Most leaks are caused by tiny cracks, often hidden to the eye. Formulated to be thinner than water, Captain Tolley’s actively draws into them using capillary action.

Thanks to all who showed interest in my old portlights. I think I have
contacted those people directly and am still working my way down the list
and will let you individually know what I have left very soon.

I did get a couple of requests for a link to the portlights that I found at
less than $200. I hope posting this link does not break any list rules,
and know that I have no connection with Defender. Also know that in order
to get the under $200 price, you need to join their $50 "Defender 1st" club
and so you will need to decide if that is right for you:

I chose the white frame.
