We're getting there! Spring weather can't be far off. Whew!

This question is primarily directed to our friends on the Chesapeake Bay.
We have a Danforth and a Plow anchor. Curious as to the consensus on which
holds better in and around the Bay.

Thanks as always for input.

Jerry,

I sail out of Rock Hall and have sailed to most places in MD. My opinion is that the Danforth will hold better in the mud and the plow hold better in a little more structural bottom. I have both but tend to use the plow as my default choice.

Jerry, I have a standard Danforth, I guess about 25-30lbs, slightly larger than a Fortress FX-16. It has worked well for years. I'm considering an FX-11, which is the size for the 320 anchoring in shallow protected waters. Others who have the Fortress, claim it is great on the Chesapeake. For better information on anchors on the Chesapeake, see a Practical Sailor article last year specifically addressing anchors on the Chesapeake. If you don't have access, write me off-line and I'll see if I can find it.
Please let me know where you keep your boat. We Chesapeakers should plan a raft-up.

We use a 35lb CQR; very happy with it. If we are on the hook
overnight, it sinks into the Chesapeake mud nicely. Also have Danfort
as a secondary.

We are in West River and would love to do a raft up! :)

I've had the best luck with a Bruce type plow anchor on the Chesapeake.

Agreed, we need to organize a rendezvous on the Chesapeake this season!! If there is enough interest, I'll do what ever I can to help make it happen.

It may have been mentioned before but there is a YouTube channel out there
called SV Panope where over that last couple years many types of anchors
have been tested and documented. What this guy does is suspends (floats) a
Go Pro camera a few feet above the anchor and records how the anchor sets.
He also pulls on the anchor from other directions to show what happens with
a wind or current shift. There are several videos and they are, in my
opinion, very educational.

Enjoy

Jerry,

I spend all my sililng time on the Chesapeake - Here's my take on it:

My C320 came with a Danforth - style anchor which let me down way too often, including once in a thunderstorm. NOT the best time to be out on deck dealing with a dragging situation. And I didn't have a spare anchor. I had had enough... Since I was going to be buying one, and I was unhappy with the Danforth, I spent a lot of time researching anchors.

I ended up choosing a Mantus. Best decision I ever made. It grabs on the first try every time and I have not yet dragged in 4 years. I have the Danforth buried in the bottom of the locker as a spare but I doubt I'll ever need it unless I lose the Mantus somehow.

Cheers,

Thanks as always for the great responses from this group. Experience, articles and videos all of great help.

We dock in Deltaville at Doziers Regatta Point. Sounds like most of you are in the Potomac/Maryland area. Give us a heads up if the rendezvous idea takes hold.

Tom,

I went with the 35LB anchor. With the stock bow roller, it just barely touches the bow of the boat. I ended up changing to the longer roller to prevent gel coat damage. Then, a couple years after I did all this, Mantus came out with the Anchor Mate. It would have saved me the trouble of changing the roller.

I went with the Mantus 45. No modifications were needed. Mine sits maybe four inches from the bow when stowed. Fits great, holds fantastic. Maybe a little overkill, but maybe that little extra insurance might pay off someday.

Hi Warren,
Folks with C320s have had several raft-ups in the past. One I think was in Ridout Creek which empties into White Hall Creek which empties into White Hall Bay near Annapolis and the other was Swan Creek which is located in Rock Hall. Raft ups can be organized quickly and take a minimal effort when compared to a rendezvous.
Rendezvous need to start being organized the year before it is supposed to happen. I have been with the association since 1999/2000 and the ones that didn't start the year before never happened and several times cost the association money because of commitments that had to still be paid when the rendezvous didn't happen.
