I currently have Raymarine instruments with a C80 chart plotter and ST60 depth/speed/wind instruments. The RS120 external GPS that feeds the chart plotter has given up the ghost. I've attempted to find a compatible GPS unit (NMEA0183) but have had no luck. Raymarine says that there new chartplotters with internal GPS will not work with the analog radar system I currently have, so I'm a bit stuck. Has anyone upgraded their electronics recently and if so with what system? Does anyone have an old RS 120 or 125 external GPS lurking in their garage that they would be willing to part with? Thanks all.

I upgraded to a Raymarine wheel pilot and the Axiom Pro. If you are
sailing in open ocean the wheel pilot won’t cut it but for the Chesapeake
it is fine.

I kept my ST60+ wind transducer and head unit but swapped out the depth and
speed unit for a i50 tridata using the old transducers. This has the
benefit of making room in the upper navpod for the autopilot head unit.
Meanwhile the Axiom Pro 11 is installed on the angle in its own pod.

The overall look is very clean. I think I have a picture somewhere in my
gallery.

Troy,

I checked out the pictures. very nice! Do you have radar and if so, is the axiom compatible with an analog radome?

I’m new to this website. So bare with me. I recently bought a 98 Catilina 320. I’m going to replace all of the electronics as soon as I get her home. Actually have most here waiting for her. Three years ago on my Pearson 303. I replaced all of the electronics on it. I built a garmin system. Actually very easy to do. But I will be removing all of the current electronics. I won’t know till a month from now what I have. But will keep you in mind. Meanwhile if your interested in building a system I can offer advice.

Sorry. I'm pretty sure that the new Lighthouse 2/3 O/S is not compatible
with older radars. If you google Lighthouse 3.0 and Radar Compatibility
there are Raymarine forums that cover the topic. I will say that the MFD
integration with all sorts of toys (including DJI drones) is pretty
cool...not necessary at all of course...

P.S. don't have a radar. Also... not necessary for cruising on the
Chesapeake...also doesn’t stop me from wanting one.

Man, it would crush me to see all of those amps draining out of the batteries and into radar.

It’s only now that I have my system to the point where the solar panels can handle the fridge, instruments, TV and music without needing to run the diesel or plug in at a dock.

By the way, I’ve had good luck with my Raymarine EV-100 autopilot up to the low 20s of wind on many – but not all -- points of sail. One fix that helped me was rewiring the plug that goes into the electric motor at the helm.

When I first installed it, the autopilot would get overwhelmed in bigger/choppy seas and I would get an error message. Turns out that the wires from the factory were not making a great connection. I forget exactly how I did it, but it wasn’t difficult.

Further thought. The RS120 has a CR2032 battery in it which gives up after 10 years or so. If you disassemble the unit you can
replace the battery easily. See https://jeanneau.proboards.com/thread/5500/raystar-rs125-battery-repl for how to do it on the
similar RS125. For the trivial cost of the battery and a little time you may well be back in business.

The Quantum 2 is 17W draw in high power transmit mode with something like a
25 mile range. It’s not that bad really. For us...it would just be a toy
and if we ever got into a situation where we actually needed radar on the
Chesapeake...I’d probably have the iron genny running anyhow. I probably
should mention that with the upgraded alternator and 462 Ah FLA house
bank...we no longer hoard amp hours. I don’t think we’ve seen 65% SOC
since our original testing of the new shunt.

The wheel pilot supposedly works 1000% better with the 'optional' RPS.
After a few years of using it without an RPS, I broke down and bought one
this winter. Unfortunately with our splash date fast approaching the
install of the RPS got relegated to the 'stuff I can do in the water'
column of my task board since I have bottom painting, rub rail and insert
replacements, and a few gelcoat dings on the must do before splash list.
Will report back if the RPS makes a noticeable difference for us.

Steven,

Thank you. I’d checked e-bay but did not pull up any RS 125’s, just a RS130 which is NMEA2000. I ordered it but the connection was slightly different. I’ve just ordered the RS125. If it works, I owe you a drink or 6…. Thanks again

Digital Yacht ( https://digitalyachtamerica.com/) has a external GPS unit ( NMEA0183) and a NMEA to SeaTalk converter, if desired, for a very reasonable price. The unit was intended to be a replacement for the Raymarine units.
