Hey Everyone,

We are contemplating a cruise to the Les Cheneaux islands in Northern Lake Huron. A friend has me fairly convinced that a dinghy would be helpful.

Options:
We have a large heavy tandem kayak that would tow wonderfully, but I’m not sure how marina friendly it would be.

Ditto on the 11’ sailing and rowing dinghy.

Our daughter has two lightweight solo kayaks that could probably be lashed to the side decks.

I’ve thought about buying an inflatable tandem kayak. An inflatable could live on the swim platform until it’s needed.

Do you have a solution you’ve been happy with (that doesn’t involve davits!)

Thanks,
John

Hi John,

For 20 years I have been using Kayaks as our dinghy(s). A dinghy came with the boat but within a couple years the outboard engine died and then the dinghy died.

I towed a 16 foot tandem for a few years but even though I was careful and monitored it closely a couple of times in heavy seas it swamped and was a bear to get unswamped.

We now use two 12 foot kayaks that sit comfortably on each side of the bow deck, each secured with a nice bungy line to the safety line or a shroud.

Hope that helps,

Hi John,
We used to bring a dinghy but now we bring 2 SUP's and have the Magma dual
SUP/Kayak rack mounted on the outside of the lifelines. Works great.
