Hello fellow C320 owners,
Now that I’ve moved from a mooring to a slip, I need mid ship cleats. Can anyone share how they have installed these and how easy/difficult was the process?
Thx

Tim,
for years I have used a mid ship cleat on my jib car track, and love it.
Easy peasy to install, just slides on the track! Catalina direct has two
models
https://www.catalinadirect.com/shop-by-boat/catalina-38/hull-deck/midship/midship-mooring-cleat-stainless-1-14quot-track/
The pricier one at $181, but gorgeous.

$81

I have two of the pricier ones, 8 years later, no probs.

Hope this helps.

"Any concerns/signs of stress on the genoa track and possible leaks?"
None. But I would wait for a larger audience to reply, as I'm on a
mooring, and only use the midship when I dock. Through the season, docking
is only a few hours, with the exception of launching and returning to my
winter yard, which I'm on the midship cleats for about 48 hours (my yard
requires midship for their dock, which is why I bought them). But I've had
no leaks or signs of strain 8 years later. I think some of the owners here
that are in the Atlantic US waters use these midship cleats when preppin'
for Hurricane forecasts. I don't remember anyone mentioning signs of
stress, Lets see what they say.

I have a design for adding a mid ship cleat along the toe rail but didn't get it fabricated yet.If you look at the bases for the lifeline stanchions, they are attached through the deck and angle up over the fiberglass toe rail. That lets water run off behind. What I came up with was a longer (wider) version of that using slightly thicker stainless plate.  I was going to tap the plate, bolt on a properly sized stainless cleat that matched the others.  I'd tack weld the bolts on the underside and grind them off flush on the underside. That would give you a nice midship cleat that wouldn't damage or stress the fiberglass toe rail. It would be thru-bolted to the deck with backing washers.  If the plate were sized correctly, the lines wouldn't chafe on the fiberglass, but rather pass over the polished stainless. The shape isn't complicated and easy to template. At one point I was going to have a dozen pairs made and offer them up to other owners but we sold the boat the year we planned to get going on this.Jeff Hare

Hi Tim,

Please put your hull number on your correspondence, and location also helps.
I installed a mid ship cleat on my port side as this is the most common side we dock on. I managed to get an exact copy of the factory installed cleats. As I am out on the water my records are not available, so I can’t tell you the supplier. I placed it above the forward cupboard in the galley as far on the outside of the deck as I could and still access the bolts inside that cupboard (careful measuring). I marked and drilled the holes on the deck, put marine chalking in the holes and under the cleat bases, and inserted the cleat. Inside the cupboard, I put an aluminum backing plate ~2.5” by 6” (depending on the cleat) predrilled for the cleat, and put lock nuts on. I have had no leaks and the cleat works great. I had to make the backing plate as I could not find a source. I guess cleat manufacturers think with four bolts the deck is sufficient to support the forces on the cleat.
Good luck.

I have this cleat as well and used it prior to installing a permanent cleat. I use it on my starboard side for the odd times I dock on this side. A problem I found is it noisy when there is wind as it lifts and rattles with the dock line stresses.

When I used this cleat extensively, I saw no problems regarding stress or leaks, just the fore mentioned noise problems.

Remember that mid-ship cleats often are used for spring lines. This means it generally will not have huge loads on it. Thus, a cleat on the jib track will not produce nearly the load that a jib in strong winds will do.

I singlehand a lot when it's too hot to take trips. I use the mid-ship cleat to secure the boat when first coming into the slip. It is positioned so the boat can't slam into the forward concrete dock and to keep the boat more or less inside the slip while I tie up the bow and stern lines.

We use a similar tactic when we use a side-tie dock. A line from the mid-ship cleat to a piling or dock cleat will hold the boat generally in place so we don't have to panic while securing other lines.

One of the real benefits of a mid ship cleat is short handed docking. The only issue I have with the Schaefer track cleats is that they are inboard far enough that you can damage a stanchion in some cases when docking in rough conditions.I've seen the result, and while the bent stanchion wasn't terrible to repair, it can happen if you drift to far forward or back under tension when docking. But for just tying up we never needed mid ship cleat for spring lines.  Just sprung from the forward and aft cleats.  We were on a tidal river dock with 1-3kt reversing current.  But the boat should have come from the factory with mids for sure.Jeff

Great conversation!

I bought a pair of these: https://www.ronstan.com/us/s32-t-track-loop-slide.html from West on clearance to use as midship cleats but my rigger advised against having them as a potential foul source. Anyone have thoughts on that? I know stanchions are not for springing but…I would not swear to have never done that.

The stress direction on the Genoa track is intended to be more upward.  The track cleat works fine for springs but it's pull is directly sideways, so long term use may require rebedding the track at some point, especially if the track experiences repeated sharp sideways loads.  But it'll work fine in most spring line use cases.Jeff

Hi everyone ,
The plastic/ nylon pins in my V berth hatch have degraded and broken on the
port hinge. Are these pins obtainable ?
Anyone in the group made this repair or am I looking at hatch replacement.
Thanks,

Although the specs in the link say these are for hatches built after 1998 (Steve's boat is 1997) and mount hole patterns may be different, so hard to use.

If it helps at all to track down a new pin, I found some notes I made in anticipation of needing sometime to deal with my trapezoidal front hatch. My boat is 1994, but what I am reading is this may also apply to your 1997 boat.
I have had to carefully bump/tap back in my port side plastic/nylon pin several times as you refer to.
My hatch is a low profile Bomar "Series 1000" Hatch #1094A. I found this stamped in the upper frame. The "A" in the number stands for "style A".  See page 3 here https://pdf.nauticexpo.com/pdf/bomar/p-series/23371-129009.html

Thanks everyone !
I'm not at the boat this weekend
So I don't have any data on model.
My son spent the night on board last night and had trouble securing the
hatch this morning. He sent me a photo this morning and it just looks like
the UV rays have degraded the white pin.
I had assumed the hatch was Lewmar since the port lights are all Lewmar.
The hinges in the photo from CD look identical. I will verify when I get
back to the boat and let you know.
Thanks to all .

On my 2000, #772 it's a trapezoid hatch made by Barlow. My starboard latch failed and I obtained a replacement from Amazon. Yes, it came as a port latch, but I have made it work.
