I have a 50' Marinco 30 amp shore power cable that I've been using for a couple of years.  Over time, the cable which started out as a nice bright yellow has slowly turned black.  Does anyone have a suggestion on how to clean the cable without damaging it?  Or should I just leave it alone?  It still works perfectly, it's just more of a cosmetic issue than a functional one.

I've used Armor All to clean and protect my shore power cable. Not like new but a definite improvement and not something aggressive that might hurt the cable.

Hey guys,

Last year my boat started making a high pitched noise while underway and its back this spring. It only happens when the boat is in gear (forward) and between about 2000 and 2800 RPMs. (I haven’t tried running the boat at 2000 or above in reverse). If I’m above or below that RPM range the noise completely disappears.

If you click this link to YouTube you can hear what I’m talking about: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/RekwF7fKeUA

I’ve checked the engine compartment, both front and back and it doesn’t seem to get any louder down below or on any part of the engine that I can locate. My first thought was belt or pull noise but it doesn’t seem to be coming from the front of the engine. I seem to hear it most in the cockpit so that got me thinking maybe cutlass bearing, but wouldn’t the water fully lubricated that? Maybe when I’m in the cockpit I’m just right above the engine and it’s in fact coming from there? I’ve repacked the stuffing box twice and there has been no change in the noise.

I’m wondering if anyone has experience a similar noise or has any ideas on what it might be or where its coming from.

Thanks much for the help,

Michael Leschisin

It’s probably the prop.

Have you recently used prop speed or something similar?

Nope, no real changes with the prop.
I had some stray voltage issues a few years back which gave me a bunch of “mineral” coating on the drive train I needed to clean that up so I’ve gotten in the habit of cleaning up the prop real well with a scotch brite pad before launching each spring.

Mike, what makes you say prop? That seem like something I never would have considered….

When I had a 320 it used to do this at times at certain speeds. Eventually it would go away. Google “Boat prop sing” for more information. I believe there was some discussion about it over the years on the C320 list. Also, here is a very simple video about it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pXGNIF5Pwis

You can use a noncontact thermometer to check each component for excess heat. The noisy things are typically hotter.
I'd suspect the alternator bearings first even though you don't thing it coming from the front.

Have you tried it moored at the dock in gear at same revs, is noise still
there. If not its the prop .Last year i had boat out new bottom paint and
cleaned the prop and once underway this high pitched sound was evident. I
researched and is a common problem and is caused by the prop and turbulence
off cleaned prop. There are some things you can do to prop to stop the
noise, lots if articles on it
