About to charge the oil, but I find that the Perkins Spec sheet does not specify the recommended engine oil viscosity (e.g., 10-30, etc.).  Can some of you with the M30 let me know what your running.  This is a SoCal boat if that makes a difference.  Thanks much!

When I bought Time A Weigh, in 2006 as my forst exposure to Diesel
maintenance, I sought the advice of our maintenance technician for the
emergence generator units supporting our Telecommunications offices in
Illinois. No discussion. Rotella T heavy duty SAE 15W - 40. I
wouldn't use anything else. Many others have confirmed that opinion
since then. Be sure the engine is warmed up before your suck out the
old oil. You can draw it out through the dip stick tube and also use
the oil plug tube on the starboard side.

Good luck,

Don, on our web site search "perkins manual" and you will have the answers
you seek.
In the environment that most of us use our boats, there are several grades
of oil that can be used. I think I've been using 15-40 oil that I buy in
gallons by the case at Sam's Club. More important is that you get heavy
duty diesel oil not standard automotive oil.
Somewhere on the label will be a circular seal that says, "API Service..."
followed by some letters and numbers. The current API codes for diesels are:
CH-4, CI-4, and CJ-4.

Hi,
Sorry to be a little late on the discussion. I concur with what has been said. My local guys have told me that they like the Castrol synthetic. I buy it in gallon size, do the change and then decant some into a litre container which I keep on board in case I need a top up. [Rarely does the engine actually need it.]
Related: When I had a Perkins mechanic on board he told me that one thing these older motors really need is a good flush of the closed cooling system. He had me do it three times before I put back in the 50-50 mixture. I replaced the funky U shaped hose at the same time. There seems to be some odd areas that can hang onto air in there. I had to check and top up the system twice afterwards. The overflow bottle works, but couldn't handle the 500 ml that I needed to put in.

Cheers,
Eric
