My (current) workplace is participating in a fundraiser for the
American Cancer Society, called the Relay for Life. It's kind of like
an 18-hour carnival in which various teams have people that walk/run
laps around a track during the whole event, trading off, and selling
things to raise money. People set up tents and hang out all night long.
We could even have a little "knitting corner" of tents maybe!
I know it has very little to do with knitting per se but since our own
Kimber has a relative who is a cancer survivor, and I know people who
are cancer survivors as well as others who didn't survive, I thought
I'd put it out to you guys to think about participating in. My
workplace needs more people to help out their team and they would be
thrilled to have anyone who would be willing to donate items to sell
for fundraising, work a booth, walk/run on the track, or any number of
things. If you have friends/relatives/survivors that you know that are
interested, let me know and I will look into registering them.
Here's part of the blurb from work for more info:
The "Relay" is a very unique event; combining a celebration of
cancer survivors, with a memorial to those who have passed on, and a
fund raiser. You may also sign-up survivors for the celebration through
me or any team member.
INFORMATION FROM THE AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY REGARDING THE RELAY FOR
LIFE!
One in three Americans will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime.
Chances are a friend, family member or someone you know is battling
cancer right now - and you can help!
The American Cancer Society is once again holding their annual Clermont
County Relay for Life on June 24th and 25th at Glen Este High School.
This is an 18-hour event that brings together teams from local
businesses, schools, churches and families for fun, food, music,
entertainment and a night under the stars, while team members take
turns walking or running on a track. The monies raised from this event
will help fund the American Cancer Society's research, education,
advocacy and quality of life programs.
Cancer survivors and fighters are the "celebrities" of this event.
They start off the Relay with a lap around the track and are treated to
a catered dinner after the lap.
The American Cancer Society is the largest not-for-profit source of
funds for scientists studying cancer. With your support, we will be
able to continue to provide a comprehensive array of cancer prevention
and detection programs, 24 hour-a-day cancer information and education
services, state advocacy initiatives and scientific research. Nearly 65
percent of cancer patients diagnosed today survives, and this survival
rate can be increased through more research and greater community
awareness. Last year's Clermont County Relay For Life raised $24,000
for the fight against cancer.
