I just had this idea. We include a chat interface (probably network
games only) for players to communicate to each other. Pretty common,
I know. AI's also have access, yes, still common. But we include a
direct message feature so players can talk one-on-one, thus allowing
players, including AI's, to do things such as make secret agreements.
I image the possibility of an AI messaging a specific player
requesting a cease fire or alliance. The human player can then
respond to either decline or accept the request.

What do you think?

In fact, the game itself could have access to this chat feature. This
could be the mechanism for special game UI things, like the game
assigning secret missions. Something that would be programmed into
the game plugin, but the user interface wouldn't know anything about
missions or how to inform the player what their missions are.

Chats sound great.  Infrequently, an AI should secure an alliance with a player, then betray them at the last minute.

But if they are betrayed they come back with a vengeance.
