Okay, I've been working with Prof. Joos on the project server to
hopefully get us something that will our project.

There is only one problem. The box that we got is a SERVER I mean the
big kind with the vacuum cleaner style fan. It has a nice 1GB of
memory, but a SCSI hard drive.
We tried doing the SCSI driver. And there is the problem. We
couldn't get XP pro on it because it did not recognize the hard
drive. We tried the option for loading drivers for SCSI drives that we
downloaded from the manufacturer web site. No luck

So here's the question. Does anyone have experience with this?

Does anyone know if we would have problems just using Linux?

I don't think that there will be problem using Linux to get the
server up.

So, any suggestions?

During your windows installation did you hit F6 when it asks for 3rd party drives?  Did you have a floppy drive with the necessary driver info installed on it?  Also how many scsi ports are there.  When I did my SATA I actually had to plug it into one of the RAID ports to get it to work since I was only doing a single drive.  I don't know if that helps and maybe you've already thought about it, but that's my 2 cents.

Stupid windows missed its chance. I say lets do the Linux thing.

Does anyone know if we would have problems just using Linux?

I'm pretty sure Ubuntu would cut it nicely. Let me know if you'd like a hand. I've got an ISO.

Clint,

We speak english here in the states and there's no such thing as a "ubuntu".  You just made that up right now didn't you?

Look it up.  It's all there.

What is this 'English' you speak of?

Ubuntu is a nice Linux distribution I'm almost finished downloading the CD image. I'll burn it and see if the vacuum like server can handle it.

I propose we name the server 'Cobra' since it's in Professor G.I . Joos' office.

I just thought it might be useful to add this information to the group
for future reference.

When I was installing Fedora Core 4 on the Compaq Proliant DL 380, I
found that Linux would hang shortly after uncompressing the kernel. I
read a few posts online that indicated that the use of the kernel
parameter acpi=off would resolve the issue. When grub ran we just chose
to modify the boot parameters and added acpi=off. It appeared to work
great.

Also, the acpi=off parameter has been set interactively at the grub boot menu up until now.

Yesterday I modified the /etc/grub.conf file to add the acpi=off paramter directly to the boot menu so it would be there automatically. Theoretically is will work, I just need to reboot the server to double check it.
