G Karunakar via the FSUG-Goa group: The key issue is: most products manufactured for use-and-throw cycle. In electronics integration it is at a high level so it's no longer an individual tiny faulty component which can be repaired. The whole circuit board needs to be changed, spares of which may be tightly controlled - either by OEMs or supply is scarce.

Another comment: I think it has gone much further than this, as we can see in points raised in the right-to-repair movement. Now we are in a situation where if we swap components/parts from *two* working units, both will stop working.
