Swiped from another list.....this is an interesting concept......
We actually have a fairly good idea of how the Chinese radios (Baofeng and rebrands) work, thanks to a few people who decided to disassemble them, and some schematics that have been tossed around online. The "guts" of the transceiver is a RDA1846 chip; the datasheet and programming manual can be found online. See http://www.elazary.com/index.php?view=category&id=14%3Abaofeng-uv5r&option=com_content&Itemid=17 by kk6bwa (who might be lurking here?) for some good writeups. At least for the UV-3R, he was able to flash his own firmware onto the MCU (which is also an off-the-shelf part, and only has 16k of space). On the UV-5r, once he toggled off the pre/de-emph and the low/highpass filters, he was able to use kristoff's 4800 GMSK modem to successfully send data. (As Matthew plans to do)
Also, I read a rumor that Baofeng is willing to produce customized versions of these radios for sufficiently large orders, though I don't know to what extent they could be customized and I don't know what the order size would be (and I don't know it to be true...). But something to keep in mind.
