If it's on site, it takes about 20 minutes to retrieve (according ot their website). We just need to find fun things to request...

IF YOU HAVEN'T GONE, GO. Oh man, the Beinecke is the best. Sorry for the long email --- but tips, as requested!

For more ideas: Search for keywords either in Orbis ("Advanced Search" --> Location = Beinecke) or in the Finding Aid Database (again, make sure you select "Beinecke" from the drop-down menu). They have an incredible Americana collection --- I love looking at the first-edition of Whitman's Leaves of Grass. Other tips:
  • Objects, photographs, and "manuscripts" (i.e., books and their prototypes) are way more fun than letters, which are often boring and impossible to read.
  • Browse through the uncatalogued acquisitions (accessible from the left menu) and see some of the weird stuff that pops up. If the site asks for a keyword, just make something up or enter a material type.
  • The Betsy Beinecke Shirley Collection of American children's literature is wicked.
  • The digital image collection (here) has tons of wonky ideas.
Once you find what you want to request, write down the Accession Number, and maybe the Author + Title. You'll need those things to make your request.

Adi's right, it doesn't take long to get the materials if you request them on-site. But if you don't want to wait 20 minutes, you can request lots of materials in advance here (also the second link on the left on the home page). Note: If you haven't been to Beinecke before, you'll have to request an account. The process only takes a few minutes --- just don't forget to bring your driver's license and Yale ID down with you when you go.

Let the treasure hunt begin.

PS. Also, as long as we're talking museums, does anyone have any interest in exploring the furniture stacks with me tomorrow? http://artgallery.yale.edu/pages/collection/study/study_furniture.php. Apparently you're allowed to "try out" the furniture. Oh baby.

Hey y'all-
I LOVE THE BEINECKE. The seminar room with the Lewis and Clark expedition map will be open starting at 11:30 (and if we are a group larger than 5 we can likely use that room instead of the reading room). You definitely want to see this map.

I'll request:
-Walt Whitman's Eyeglasses
-Vinland Map (I'm emailing Kathryn James in hopes of getting the required special permissions)
-Manuscript for de Tocqueville's Democracy in America

Does 11:30 work for people?

They have pieces from the ancient Egyptian book of the dead! I've seen them before, trying to find the call number now..

WONDERFUL! I'm psyched about the trip. Let's shoot for working in the Lewis and Clark map room.

I'm calling for the original Leaves of Grass to complement Mr. Whitman's spectacles.

I'm also trying to find the call numbers of some jazz age NYC photos.

A demain, Frances

Beinecke librarians love that we are coming for a senior bucket list event, but want an approximation on the number of people interested. Can people email in so I can give them a number (you can also just email me if you don't want to click reply all)?

We have clearance for the Vinland Map!

Any chance we could do later in the afternoon? This all sounds great but I'll be stuck in a rehearsal until 1!

I'll definitely come along! Late morning would be better for me than afternoon (gotta pack!), but whenever's best for everyone.

Anyone still want to head over to Beinecke or the stacks? I think I'm heading to at least one of them at 3pm!
