Sir,
Why is static friction greater than kinetic friction?

Hi Chetana,

The origin of frictional force is due to the intermolecular bonds between the body in motion and the surface on which it moves. Basically due to the normal reaction of the body and the surface on which it rests, both the surfaces get cold welded with each other resulting in creation of friction. When a body is at rest, the amount the force required to break this cold welding is the largest and is given by static friction. While in motion, the cold welded bonds required to be broken comes down greatly because the motion does not allow a lot of them to come into existence. As a result, the dynamic friction is lesser than the static value.

Hope that clears the doubt

Regards,
Arjun
