"suffixes" in directions

Various segments in routes are followed by [b], [l], [c], [h], and on
one route I did, [b,m,h].

I haven't found anything yet on the site that tells me what those mean.
I suspect it has to do with the kind of designation that segment is
given in the "Bike There" map.

Please enlighten me!

Your suspicion is correct.

Portland region:

b - bike lane
l - light traffic
m - moderate traffic
h - high traffic
c - caution area
p - local path
t - regional path

Milwaukee region:

t - bike trail
r - bike route
l - bike lane
p - preferred street
