Hello,
On my intranet site we have a training page with a link to a
Powerpoint Slide Presentation. I saved the file in PowerPoint as
a .ppsx which should when hyperlinked open the slide show in
presentation mode. It does not.

What am I doing wrong. How can I have a .ppsx file be viewed in
presentation mode within Expression Web.

A hyperlink will only do what you have associated the file extension to do.
The visitor would need to have PowerPoint installed and configured to open
in IE in order to do what you want. The server also has to be configured
with the correct mime type to send to the browser. Most are configured for
ppt not ppsx so you may want to save our PowerPoint in the older
presentation format.

Thanks for the info. I'll ask our Network folks to check the server
setting.

Our network folks checked and they reported that the server is
configure to recognize ppsx. The mime type is set to ppsx the same as
a user computer system.

So this tells me that the problem is something else and that it is the
use of a .ppsx within Expression Web. I had read somewhere that this
was a reported problem and that I need to convert the ppsx file to a
flash file and it would then open as a 'running' slide show. I don't
have Flash software; don't know how much it cost and if it is
compatable with EW. Anybody have some thoughts on how I might convert
the file to a flash file and will it work within expression web as a
'running' slide show view.

No, it isn't Expression Web. How a browser handles a non-html depends on
what the visitor's settings are configured to do when sent the mime type
from the server. On my computer any PowerPoint will trigger an "open or
save" dialog box. On my husband's computer it will run in the browser. The
difference is in how our individual systems are set up. In a corporate
environment that choice can be locked down by group policy where you enforce
that IE is the only browser allowed on the company computers and configure
IE for running Office apps in the browser.

Flash loads through a plug-in which is what allows it to play in the
browser. The visitor must have the correct plug-in for the version of Flash
that is served installed and not blocked.

There are several ways to convert PowerPoint to Flash. I use Camtasia
http://www.techsmith.com/camtasia.asp from Techsmith. Depending on the size
of your PowerPoint presentation you might be able to use their SnagIt
program to create a Flash file but I'm not sure about that. Camtasia is what
I have been using for years to create the tutorials on the by-expression.com
site as well as material for my classes. The other option if all you want to
do is to take an existing PowerPoint file and turn it into a slide show is
an older program from Swishzone called Swish Presenter but I don't see it on
their site anymore. http://www.swishzone.com/index.php

A more user friendly way that does not require plug-ins is to export your
PowerPoint slides as png files then use javascript to animate the slideshow.
There are hundreds of free slideshows including jQuery ones that are pretty
easy to use. There is also the accessible office converter from the
University of Illinois that will convert your PowerPoint to a slide show

Cheryl,
We were wondering by chance to you have some instructions to change
the IE settings? We'd like to pursue that option.

Thanks Karen

Actually I don't because I prefer not to open Office applications in my
browser. Google finds this http://www.pptfaq.com/FAQ00189.htm which may
help you.
