Yesterday using my new EW4 I opened up a website which had been compiled in
EW3. I made some adjustments to a page and after doing so, I published the
amended file. This would not show as being altered on the remote server.
After refreshing and uploading many, many times, I reverted to EW3. I was
now able to update the page.
On then working on another file, again using EW4 and publishing without
successfully updating the remote site, I used Cute FTP as I was able
immediately to update my page.
Would this be caused by 'human error' [me] ? or is this something that can
happen in EW4?
Other than that so far, I am delighted with EW4.
Kind regards,
Jill

Are you sure you are publishing to the correct location? Do you have changed
files selected?
Check by looking the remote location and matching that to the one in ew3.

Jill: Yes of course, as dragging across the file worked
Check by looking the remote location and matching that to the one in ew3.
Jill: had added the remote location addresses to my EW4 - and have checked
that this is the correct location as well.
Ok I have just set it up again, and I added and 's' to my file name maps
instead of map and published this. I can now see it is going to outside of
the _public_html
I have 3 websites on this account, so tend to have it go to the Host address
rather than indivual websites. Is this incorrect?

Jill

In location put ftp://kingston-bagpuize.com
in Direcotory put public_html/the-name-of-your-web-space
I think where you are going wrong ... is the name of the space
In ew check the name of the space that your website is in
mine for any expression for example is any-expression
I could have anyoldexpression or whatever

I have also accidently now deleted the htaccess file which made each of my

All the files are showing. Added an index file to stop this and of course,
then could not access the sites at all.

What I do when I'm uncertain about the directory or EW doesn't seem to be
publishing to the correct location set EW (or Dreamweaver for that matter)
to go to the site root. I then examine the folders on right side (left in
Dreamweaver) when I'm connected. Next, I copy the name of the next level
down I need to connect to in order to publish to the correct part of the
hosting space. Then I paste that folder name in the Directory field of
publishing setting. Repeat the process until I'm in the exact folder I want
EW to use as the remote site's publishing location.
That way I know that my spelling, capitalization, etc. is exactly the same.
Here's a tidbit for you, if EW 3 was publishing to the correct location you
can copy the site settings from EW 3 to EW 4, see item 3 at
http://by-expression.com/blogs/by-expression/archive/2010/06/09/more-on-expr
ession-web-v4.aspx
Hopefully, you have a back-up of your htaccess file. If not, either ask your
host to restore (some charge a small fee) or recreate it and make sure you
do have a local back-up. I like to keep one in an archival copy of the site
as well as htacces.bak and sometimes in a plain text file as well.

Cheryl:
htacces.bak and sometimes in a plain text file as well.
Jill:
Can you make a 'backup' copy as you are obviously doing here and keep it
within the website that the htaccess is appropriate for and also keep
another copy as a plain text file of the content of the htaccess? If you do
that with the plain text file - what could you call it, for example? This
seems so daft a question that I wonder at me sending this, but I DO need to
know. These .bak files and plain text files don't alter in any way do they
when you now make them into htaccess files - when necessary?
I get in an awful muddle making htaccess files, as I make these in my
Desktop and name them as per instructions .htaccess - now later I may make
another which has totally different content than the 1st and given the same
name, it of course overwrites the other.
Is Desktop the place to make them and if so, once made it is best to store
copies within the website? Oh another thing, if I then publish my site as a
backup to my Hard drive or my external HD, do these stored htaccess files
get taken along with the publishing? Sorry to be quite so dim.;-((
Am just reading your blog - thanks again.
Kind regards,
Jill

When you save a .htaccess file under any other name you can keep it in your
site w/o worry. That is why I use htaccess.bak or htaccess.txt. Notice that
neither of these starts with a period. To restore it from your back-up
simply save it back as .htaccess and republish.
Since EW doesn't like to show files that begin with a dot I typically use
Filezilla or WS-FTP Pro to publish them. For back-up I simply copy the whole
web folder to another drive or external disk/cd/dvd.
[Sitting at my window watching it snow, over 1/2 inch in the last hour. My
silly puppy keeps going out on the deck through the doggy door then
scratches to be let in instead of walking back through the doggy door with a
nice coating of snow on his back.]

Just put the backup .htaccess file back on the web
Tina
If the path exists which is obviously does or your site would not be online
.....
Then you are putting in the wrong path.
Open up the ew that has the correct path and copy the path exactly if that
means your site is in a folder of a folder of a folder then use that
whatever it is.
Type out exactly what its called
I know I make this mistake frequently I just moved to bluehost and its not
alike a reseller (mores the pity) and you have to use the exact path under
public_html with the named folder for that domain i have a lot of 'spare'
almost the same name domains and it gets confusing particaruly now when i am
moving between computers and versions and beta versions .... I have to keep
putting em in.
Tina
I am writing in my htaccess file, but this is not allowing the website to be
seen at all.
Is this correct please?
# Bluehost.com
# .htaccess main domain to subdirectory redirect
# Copy and paste the following code into the .htaccess file
# in the public_html folder of your hosting account
# make the changes to the file according to the instructions.
# Do not change this line.
RewriteEngine on
# Change yourdomain.com to be your main domain.
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^(www.)?thematic-trails.org$
# Change 'subdirectory' to be the directory you will use for your main
domain.
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !^/thematic-trails/
# Don't change this line.
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
# Change 'subdirectory' to be the directory you will use for your main
domain.
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ /thematic/$1
# Change yourdomain.com to be your main domain again.
# Change 'subdirectory' to be the directory you will use for your main
domain
# followed by / then the main file for your site, index.php, index.html,
etc.
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^(www.)?thematic-trails.org$
RewriteRule ^(/)?$ thematic-trails/ [L]

I don't know, Pat is the one who knows more about this but she is away for
the next week. You must have a backup somewhere? Or something you can copy
from?
I just use the interface in bluehost to do the redirects... why don't you do
that? Or follow pat's tutorials on it
