Dear Colleagues,
I would like to share good news within the Adult Learning and
Education sub-sector. Two weeks ago on 25th March, Minister of Gender,
Community Development and Social Welfare, Hon Patricia Kaliati,
launched the first ever Diploma in Adult Education and Development
program in the country pioneered by Catholic University of Malawi
(CUNIMA), with support from DVV International. This is a great step
towards professionalizing the adult learning and education (ALE)
-subsector which faces challenges in qualified human resource to
improve the quality and access of ALE provision in the country. The
National Adult Literacy and Education Policy approved by government
last year, requires active participation of all key players including
public and private universities to ensure successful implementation.
Higher education institutions can assist in addressing gaps in the
sub-sector through quality training, research and community outreach
as well as advocacy.
Most speeches on the day urged both public and private higher
education institutions to emulate the example set by CUNIMA is
introducing diploma programmes. I wish these programmes go up to
bachelors, masters and PHD levels, why not?
I contributed to events of the day, by giving a public lecture on the
status of ALE in Malawi and the role of higher education institutions.
Please find the pdf attached.
Once again, congrats CUNIMA management led by Vice Chancellor, Rev.
Dr. George Buleya for for leading the way. And special thanks to DVV
International through Mr. David Harrington, the Regional Director, for
providing financial and technical support, as well as offering
scholarships to at least 10 students apart from providing assorted
equipment to help the programme succeed. We need more donors and other
players to support CUNIMA and other Universities that would like to
take up this new challenges. The leadership shown by Ministry of
Gender in providing policy direction and gracing the launch of the
diploma programme should not be taken for granted. Special thanks to
Hon Kaliati and the Management in the Min of Gender as well.
Regards,
Limbani.
