"Education is where we begin the making of a nation," said President Mutharika.

I hope the president will follow up on what he has pledged. Putting these words into action could signal a significant change in Malawi's education.

Steve

True Steve, it could be the dawn of true quality education; a shift from lip service to reality. Can't wait for that day!!

Ba Dr Sharra,

This statement is loaded and should never be taken lightly.

With the same population of 14/15,  million peope, just as Malawi,   Zimbabwe has now close to 14 + universities,  about one university for every 1 million people, over 2 000 secondary schools  close to 8 000 to 10 000 primarily schools.

With Africa's highest literacy rate of 93%, and a strong and viable middle class and a generally elitist society,  Zimbabweans have survived sanctions,  misrule, shortages and all sorts of challenges because they are a hardy and THINKING nation. No dependency on handouts.

Zimbabweans have the uncanny ability to turn things around because of the high rate of quality education.

Yes the APM government need to leave no stone unturned to achieve higher literacy rate and high quality education rare,  than we see now.

People should stop wasting their tine dancing at rallies when the Malawi economy is sick and frail.

It is this top prioritised education that is reaping dividends for the nation in terns of a robust informal sector,  that has overcome the shrinking formal sector, given a current close to 84 unemployment countrywide.

With quality education,  Zimbos are able to sustain their economy because they have the ability to think,  substitute,  import substitute and manufacture in their backyards.

It's not like in Malawi where people believe that the  government is a magic wand capable of b providing everything for everyone all the time and at any time and any place and all the time.

What a misconception.

i agree with Ba Kachale on Zimbabwe. every where you go it is hard to find some who cannot communicate in English. furthermore, its easy to notice that this is a middle class society. I hope the President is committed on education

This is a meaningless story.
There are no figures, there is no timeline, nothing.
In 2019, we will not be able to cite this statement to use as criterion for success or failure.
He has pledged nothing.
It's just a feel-good exchange of words.

Now that the commitment is out in the open, it is the role of the pressure groups and other activists to keep monitoring and reminding.

We all, as members of the Education sector, need to also play our part and ensure that the president puts his money where his mouth is... or should that be our money ;-)...taxes et al

We need to ensure that these words translate into action..

Unfortunately we Malawians are sometes too soft not great activists. That why every time the government changes Road Traffic comes up with something new and we the people most affected just quietly go along.

Let's not do the same when it comes to most valuable investment for our future generations.. EDUCATION..
