Teaching policies and learning outcomes in Sub-Saharan Africa
The UNESCO International Institute for Capacity Building in Africa (IICBA) in collaboration with UNESCO Member States in Africa and the Teacher Task Force has published "Teaching policies and learning outcomes in Sub-Saharan Africa: issues and options". This publication was elaborated as an annex to the 2015 Teacher Policy Development Guide and aims to address teacher-specific issues in Africa by formulating recommendations for a policy framework that addresses the challenges of teacher motivation and improving learning outcomes. The publication is available in English and French
International Guidance Framework for Professional Teaching Standards
At the outcome of the 10th Policy Dialogue Forum, Member States issued an Outcome Statement urging the Teacher Task Force, UNESCO, the International Labour Organization (ILO), and Education International to develop an international guiding framework to support countries in elaborating national or regional professional standards for the teaching profession. We are happy to announce that the first phase of this work is currently underway.

The work will begin with a mapping and comparative analysis of national and regional frameworks to learn about the stakeholders and processes involved in designing the standards, the specific teacher competences addressed, the approaches to setting standards, and the uses of the frameworks. A questionnaire for collecting the information will soon be sent to all UNESCO Country Offices. A draft of the report will be shared for commentary at a consultation meeting to take place during the 11th Policy Dialogue Forum in November. The findings from the mapping exercise and the consultation meeting will inform the second phase of the work on developing the guidance framework.

We urge all TTF members to participate in this project. If you have been or are involved with developing a framework of professional teaching standards for your constituency, or if you have any questions about the project, please get in touch with Sonia Guerriero
(s.gue...@unesco.org).
