पञ्चमभावकारकत्वम् - जिज्ञासा

Poojya Koradaji,

I am a student of jyotisha from Mysuru and associated with Indian Council of Astrological Sciences started by Dr B V Raman. 

In all books of jyotisha one of the karakatvas listed for panchama bhava is purva punya. However, I was surprised to see that most of the classics, including BPHS does not mention purva punya explicitly. 

A good friend of mine however referred to a shloka from Jataka Parijata - 13:1.
I am not sure whether I have understood the verse properly. Kindly guide me as to the proper meaning of this verse. 

Or is there any other grounds for telling that panchama bhava is associated with purva punya.

आयुष्मान् भव सौम्यकुमार

पुत्रात् देवमहीपपुत्रपितृधीपुण्यानि संचिन्तयेत्  -- जातकपारिजातम् - १३-१

Here पुत्रात् इति लक्षणा -- पुत्रस्थानात् इत्यर्थः ।

Similarly , पुण्यानि means पुण्यकार्याणि  ( but not पूर्वपुण्यम्) - so how many पुण्यकार्याणि the native may perform can be predicted 
from पञ्चमस्थानम् ।

उत्तरकालामृते - पञ्चमभावकरकत्वफलम् ---

सन्तानं पितृपुण्यरजसचिवाः सौशील्यशिल्पे......
तत्पुण्यासत्प्रविचारमन्त्रजपकाः .....भवेत् पञ्चमात् ॥

Here पुण्य means पुण्यकार्याणि ।

पुण्यासत्प्रविचार means पुण्यपापकार्यविचार

सादरं वन्द आचार्यान् ।

पञ्चमभावपदार्थान् आह प्रश्नमार्गकारः -

प्रज्ञा प्रतिभा मेधा विवेकशक्तिः पुरातनं पुण्यम्
मन्त्रामात्यतनूजाः पञ्चमभात् सौमनस्यमपि चिन्त्यम् ॥ इति ।

तत्रैव कथिता नवमभावपदार्था यथा -

भाग्यधर्मदयापुण्यतपस्तातसुतात्मजाः ।
दानोपासनसौशील्यगुरवो नवमादमी ॥

अत्र पञ्चमभावविषयेषु पुरातनं पुण्यं स्पष्टमेवोल्लिखितमस्ति । नवमभावविषयेषु तु पुण्यं तज्जनकं तपोदानादिकं कर्मजातं च सन्दृब्धम् । एवं च पञ्चमभावः पूर्वपुण्यविषयकः, पुण्यकार्यं तु विषयो भवति नवमभावस्येति विवेकः परम्पराप्राप्तो वर्ततेऽस्मदीयानां ज्योतिर्विपश्चिताम् । केरलेषु कर्णाटकेषु च पञ्चमभावं पूर्वपुण्यस्थानमित्येव उल्लिखन्ति दैवज्ञा इत्यप्यत्र अवधानार्हम् । तदेतन्मनसि कृत्वा पञ्चमभावविषये यत्र यत्र (विभिन्नेषु ग्रन्थेषु) पुण्यशब्दः प्रयुक्तः, तत्र सर्वत्र पूर्वपुण्यमेव विवक्षितमिति कथनं समुचितं मन्ये ।

Respected Ramakrishnanji,

Prasna is a chart erected for the time when question is asked. Astrologers say that it's utility is for a short period and does not have life long impact.

In that situation how should we understand the word पुरातनं पुण्यम् ? Does it mean punya earned in poorva janmas or punya earned in this janma prior to consultation with the astrologer?

Some works say it is पुण्यकार्याणि whereas other works say it is पूर्वपुण्यम् ( of course it is पूर्वजन्मक्रुतपुण्यम्) -- then we have to 
resort to पूर्वमीमांसा --

उदिते जुहोति , अनुदिते जुहोति -- इत्यत्र , अतिरात्रे षोडशिनं गृह्णाति , नातिरात्रे षोडशिनं गृह्णाति -- इत्यत्र च विकल्पः स्वीकृतः - उभयमपि प्रमाणम्।

(उदिते आदित्ये , अनुदिते आदित्ये ; अतिरात्रम्  यागविशेषः ; षोडशी  पात्रविशेषः)

Similarly - in ज्योतिषम् also -- पुण्यकार्याणि as well as पूर्वजन्मपुण्यम् -- both are प्रमाणम् in पञ्चमभावकारकत्वम् ।

There is one point to be noted --

both बृहज्जातकम् of वराहमिहिराचार्य and उत्तरकालामृतम् of कालिदास say that the जातकचक्रम् (horoscope) is nothing but a 
chart of पुण्य and पाप that are  earned by the native (horoscopee) during the earlier incarnations .

dhanyavadah for clearing a doubt that was bugging me for long. You have also clearly demonstrated for us how the nirnaya is arrived at and how pramana has to be actively sought, and not confine ourselves to just one variety of shastra pramana

You have said that for 5th bhava both punyakaryani and purvajanmapunyam should be considered in line with the logic of mimamsa. 
Earlier Sri Ramkrishnanji has referred to –
भाग्यधर्मदयापुण्यतपस्तातसुतात्मजाः ।
In relation to navama bhava.
Therefore, can we conclude that the word punya in the above shlok refer to purvapunya also? 
Do acharyas like Adi Sankara also refer to punya as something related to past births only?

No . Vidvan Ramakrishna was of the opinion that पञ्चमभाव is for पूर्वजन्मकृतपुण्यम् whereas नवमभाव is for पुण्यम् ।

भावनिघण्टु of मुहूर्तदीपिका --

नवमं तपदीकं च सुकृतं गुरुभाग्यकम् ।
पितृज्ञानं दया भक्तिः देवतोपसनं तथा ॥
चित्रानन्दः तथा स्वामी भावो’यं नवमः स्मृतः ।

उत्तरकालामृतम् of कालिदास --

दानं धर्मं सुतीर्थसेवनतपोगुर्वादिभक्त्यौषधा-
चाराश्चित्तविशुद्धिदेवभजने विद्याश्रमो वैभवः।
यानं भाग्यनयप्रतापसुकथायात्राभिषेकादयः

In both it is the पुण्यकर्माणि that is to be predicted from नवमभाव , which is also called धर्मस्थानम् ।

The problem was only with पञ्चमभावकारकत्वम्  .

Yes it is the पूर्वjजन्मकृतकर्म -- both पुण्यम् and पापम् , only, that is taken up by आचार्याः ।

There is close relation between ज्योतिषम् and वेदान्त ( discussed long ago ).

नूत्ना दृष्टिः प्रत्ता तत्रभवद्भिरस्मिन् विषये मीमांसान्यायाधारेण । आधमर्ण्यमात्मनो निवेदये ।

आदरणीय सौम्यकुमारवर्य, पुरातनं पुण्यमिति शब्दः पूर्वजन्मार्जितं पुण्यमित्येव व्याख्यातः । तच्च व्याख्यानं ग्रन्थकर्तुः शिष्यपरम्परागतस्यैव । अतस्तस्य शब्दस्य प्रश्नकालपर्यन्तं तस्मिन् जन्मनि कृतानि पुण्यकर्माणि इति व्याख्या न युज्येत । आचार्याणां कोराडासुब्रह्मण्यवर्याणामभिप्रायोऽपि एतत्संवादी दृश्यते ।
