Dear Members,

I wanted to read Vishnu Purana in Sanskrit for my studies and I got some books by NAG publication, Gitapress, and also H Wilson's translation however there are a lot of various readings in these books. Does anyone know where will I get some authentic versions of Vishnu Purana, mostly with commentaries to understand.

Thank you.

Prasad J

Critical edition of VP based on available palmleaf manuscripts is
overdue. Any effort in that direction is welcome.
No.2 below edited by Veeravalli Jagannathacharya contains both the
vishnucittiiya and Sridhariiya vyaakhyaana.

Thanks

The following uses mss from many parts of India. It seems to be a result of systematic and dedicated study:

A Critical Edition of the Vi.s.nupuraa.nam
Editor: M.M. Pathak
Publisher: Vadodara : Oriental Institute, 1997-
Volume I (1 to 3 A.m;sas)

I do not know if any other volumes have been published.

Thank you all for your replies. I am really sorry for so late reply.

Dear Mr. Dash, from where you got this data? This is so useful.
I was searching on internet for these publications, however it is difficult to find some of these. Ex. Vangavasi Press, Calcutta; Jananasuryodaya Press, madras; N. S. Press, Bombay; Sundappalayam, Coimbatore; Kumbhakonam, Bombay.
Do you also know how to search for these publications and how to get the books from them?

Thank you.

Prasad J

Thank you again for the help.

Does anyone have any contacts of some traditional Vishnu Purana scholars? I feel in south India there will be many. Please share with me.

"Does anyone have any contacts of some traditional Vishnu Purana scholars? I feel in south India there will be many."

To find such a scholar nowadays may be almost impossible.
For, nowadays mostly we hear of scholars, pravacanakaara-s, etc. active only in the Vaishnava Bhagavatapuranam. Even many of the Sanskrit scholars and modern researchers scarcely refer, mention or study or even be familiar with some of the other ancient Mahapurana-s.

Dear Sri Prasad,

An edition by Munilal Gupta: http://archive.org/details/SriSriVishnuPurana

The present, senior and 45th Jeeyar, paramahamsyetyadi Srimath Azhagiya Singar of Sri Ahobila Mutt has written detailed commentary on the
Vishnu Purana in Tamil in his purvasramam; while this is available and printed in Tamil. An English translation of this is being published as a
regular series over the past few years in the monthly magazine - Sri Nrisimhapriya.

You can also purchase an audio English discourse by Sri U. Ve. Velukkudi Krishnan, based on traditional commentaries, here:

Hope this helps.

Regards,
-Shreyas
