Dear All,

I understand Prof HN Bhat passed away on October 22, 2020. (See attachment). May his soul rest in peace.

Many of us who were recipients over the years of his vast knowledge of Sanskrit texts,  especially grammar texts, are plunged in deep sorrow.

This is indeed a great loss to Sanskrit scholarship. A scholar par excellence, maintained a low profile throughout his career. French Institute was blessed to have him as its resource person. He was prompt in answering several questions, and contributed to BVP a lot with unmatching scholarship. सद्गतिप्राप्तिरस्त्विति प्रार्थना ।

Very sad.
He was a good scholar.
He carried out his doctoral research in our Department under the supervision of Prof.  N. V. P. Unithiri.
I think that his scholarship was not properly recognized.

Very Sad.
I joined BVP only relatively recently, but am glad that I could read his scholarly posts here.  He responded to a few of my posts too, and his responses were quite informative.

My heartfelt condolences to his family.

May he obtain sadgati!

Namaste,

I learnt Kashika under his guidance. I used to shoot questions to him via mail and he used to clarify the problem very easily.

What I loved most about his style was that he did not give the answer directly. He did not believe in spoon feeding. He would ask you counter question. Once you think about his counter question, you yourself would come to know about fallacy in your questions. And this learning gets retained in mind for long, long time.

A personal loss to me.

I would appreciate if someone from the list can send me his residential address off list.

An erudite scholar indeed.  He had a knack of researching the text and cite as the problem would need.
I benefited through his research and analysis.
I didn't know his age.  This is a profound loss to the field of Sanskrit studies.
Peace!

Indeed a great loss to Samskrit scholarship and personal loss to me.

I had worked along with him in French institute of Pondicherry during 1999 to 2004. And immensely benifited by his scholarship.

He worked in EFEO for 24 years collaborating with many scholars both indian and Western.

However due his style of communication, his reach was limited to mostly writing, but that too was limited by the French style of administration.

He published
Murāri’s pañcikā on the Anargharāghava. He also published, with S.A.S. Sarma, a first critical edition of the Keralan aesthete Pūrasarasvatī’s commentary (Bhaktimandākinī) on the Viṣṇupādādikeśastotra as already  noted. But his published (in other persons name) writings include Bhavabhuti word index (published under .....name as everyone knows it).
In this way, he might have published so many things. May be kashika critical edition, he was working on it partially.
He had prepared one more critical edition of a kavya work, perhaps Mahanayak??? SAS Sharma knows better.
But he was noticed by most of people only in BVP and other forums after this evolution of internet properly.
He had been paralyzed for many years now but still could participate in BVP enthusiastically.
He could not come to Udupi conference of BVP due to his ailments.
I hope French people will take measures to publish his works.

Shocked to learn about the demise of Dr.HN Bhat . Heartfelt condolences.

I have met him in his house once in Chennai three or four years ago. What amazed me most was - he was living in a remote suburb of Chennai where internet communication, accessibility by road even was very difficult. His computer also needed updating, a CD that we took did not work, the system was very slow, the OS will not cooperate. But the way he was communicating with us all in BVP was amazing.

I could see the verse in action - क्रियासिद्धिः सत्त्वे वसति महतां नोपकरणे।

Salutations to the great soul.

Dear Dr Patel,

I believe Dr Bhat's phone - +91 82960 53906 - is still active. The news came through this phone sent by his son.

I wish someone who lives in Chennai can go to his son's residence, collect as many facts as possible, and publishes a fitting eulogy celebrating his scholarship. Perhaps Veeranarayana Pandurangi ji can put it all together for us.

He was a great man, an embodiment of a great scholarship culture.

Thanks.

Very sad news.

Bhat ji was a good friend of mine. We had good interactions on beauty of Samskruth, teaching methods and grammar intricacies. He has made good contributions to the field of Samskruth studies.

I recall two memorable lines here, which aptly applies  to  Bhat ji:

नास्ति तेषां यशःकाये, जरा-मरणजं भयम्

Dr. Bhat was a very amiable person.  I had a chance to meet him personally in 2012 in Chennai when he had come to the venue where the Sringeri Jagadguru was camping for Chaturmasya and the annual Mahaganapati Vakyartha Sabha was on.

He expounded to me personally over chat a small text of humorous verses some years ago.

Our tributes to the exalted soul.

It’s a shocking news to me that Dr. Harinarayana Bhat is no more.
He is such a person to remember for ever. He is very simple in person and highly reputed in scholarship.
Sanskrit world lost A grate grammarian, and a critic.
I had a grate chance to accompany with him for more than ten years while working in EFEO, Pondicherry during 1987. - 97, preparing entire Samasa section of Paniniya Udaharana Kosha.  But unfortunately the publishers omitted my name in the publication. Of course this is quite common practice every where.  But Dr. HN Bhat is really a peculiar scholar, who could succeeded such people and continued upto end of service.
He has submitted his theses on Pancika on Anarghararaghava, to Madras University during 1987, working as a Sanskrit teacher at school level. His theses was attracted the scholars,  And made him appointed in the EFEO, placing him in a world wide reputation.

I pray Lord Srimannarayana to shower his grace on Harinarayana, for ever peace of his departed soul.
I convey My deep condolence to his family members.

True Sir.
But unfortunately the publishers omitted my name in the publication. Of course this is quite common practice every where.

It is also particularly true in French context.
I wonder nobody in BVP asked in whose name Bhats work on Bhavabhuti word index is published.
This is saddest thing to happen. But such things do happen.

I am shocked at his demise..!!
Sanskrit fraternity has lost an exemplary grammarian cum critic.
Most of the time, his replies were instantaneous & very curt yet thought provoking
His postings & comments can be seen in most of the sanskrit blogs in the internet.

Sir was living at Shimoga with his daughter.
He is a very very simple man by his looks & attire. He never complained of food or the place. He used to adjust himself wherever he is put in.
His sole companion was his tablet & few sanskrit books .
Once when he approached SBI for an error . The staff misunderstood him to be an illiterate seeing his simple looks & attire & nudged him away.
The staff then suggested do that way, do this way..
Sir then let out his wisdom from the bag, no body could withstand his thorough knowledge in internet, apps etc & all were astonished.

Sir was suffering from Jaundice & was admitted in the hospital.
He was made to undergo corona test whose result was negative.
But the hospital authorities admitted him & kept on performing test after test..
He was shifted out from ICU & put on general medicines.
He breathed his lost on 22.10.2020 at his 72 years of age.
his son flew from USA and performed the last rites.
Learnt from her daughter that hnbhat01at gmail dot com is still alive .
People can express their condolences in that mail.

He will be ever remembered by me for all the guidance he has given especially to the samskrita googlegroup.

Few pictures of sir..

Thanks for sharing those excellent pictures and a detailed eulogy, Sri K N Ramesh-ji.

I saw that sea shore picture in his profile. But that was small and low pixel. This is a high resolution one. Thanks for sharing.

That family pic is also a good selection and has come out very well.

This list misses him deeply.
