Is there any edition of the Amara Kosha that contains also the index with page number at the beginning or the end of the book so that one can look for the word in the index and go to the verse?

Alternatively, is there a resource where one can enter the word and get to see the kosha shloka for that word? The one available here is not very user-friendly.

The Adyar Library and Research Centre, Chennai published Amarakosha with two unpublished south Indian commentaries - Amarapada vivrti of Lingayasurin and Amarapada-parijata of Mallinatha in 1971, in 3 volumes. The 3rd volume has an index with gloss. Not sure still copies are available.

I believe, you may download the pdf of the same from archive.org.

Namaste Sri Subrahmanian,

You may try the amarakosh interface developed by Dr. Sivaja Nair, as a paart of her PhD dissertation, available at
or also at

Here is a screenshot for the word राम, showing the verse

amarakosha.png

You may also get the  kANda, varga details if you place the cursor on the word, as shown below.

I would appreciate to know if it serves your purpose, or if you are looking for something else.

With kind regards,
Amba Kulkarni

Thank you for the link. It helps a lot.  But the shloka is not displayed.  The shloka is embedded in the meaning given and one can't access the shloka.

Please see attached image.

Yes, the shloka is shown in the pop up window, and you can not copy-paste from it.
But you know the shloka number when you place a cursor on the word.
And then you can refer to the text with this index.
It is possible to change the interface detaching it from the cursor, and showing the text in a separate window.

I'll do it when I get some time.
Thanks for this suggestion.

With best regards,

Thanks for your response. If that is implemented, the interface will be a one-stop window for many people's needs.

Namaste,
For those who can read Kannada, the Louis Rice edition published by Mysore Univ has this. We prepared the print ready PDF for this and used that opportunity to include Kannada and English word index as well. I was surprised to see that 'cockroach' is there in Sanskrit -  परोष्णी , तैलपायिका (२.४.४९३) !
I will try to generate a Devanagari text using the Kannada source we have.

Namalinganushasana with commentary of Kshirasvamin ed. by KG Oka, Poona, 1913 has alphabetical word index, with page and verse no. If you can't locate it online please send a private mail. I will be happy to share the same. It is too large to attach here.

There are numerous editions of the Amara-kos'a with word-index.
The NSPress edition (with SudhA) has additional indexes also.

Sir,

Amarakosha by Shri N. Ranganatha Sharma in Kannada has a word index that points to the shlokas. This book should be available for buying for in well known book shops in Bangalore.

Very nice to hear this. Please make the document an easily searchable one so that it can be really user friendly.

Thanks.
