Learning of mine:

1:- Do not rote learn intially, just use these resources and with time you will realise what is actually to be memorized(as is the case with shabdaroop and dhanturoop).

2:-A text(book) makes sense to its writter, so will it make to you if you are able to connect with him.Vyakran and koshas are the instrument to connect to the text.If there is a contradiction between these analysing instruments and the text(any sanskrit literature) ,then atleast in that situation text has the authority.As said by mataji(शास्त्र और लोक मे अन्तिम प्रमाण लोक है।)

Samskrita Bharati is doing great job of teaching sanskrit to interested persons.

You can learn Sanskrit from home.

Path: Attend samskrita Samhana Course for 10 days. Online options are available conducted by Samskrita Bharati local chapter groups.

Subsequently register for 4 courses one after another  Pravesha, Parichaya, Shiksha, Kovida  each of 6 months duration. Attend the exam. qualify to the next level. 

Lot of local chapters conduct courses online. That is Like you attend weekly one or two classes on line of 1 hr duration

After 2 years you have reasonable proficiency to understand the material with resource materials like 

Alternatively they have courses which teaches Gita

1. Gita Sopanam Part I.
 2. Gita Sopanam Part II.
 3. Gita Pravesha Part I.
 4. Gita Pravesha Part II.

On completion of these four levels, you will not only be able to read and understand the Bhagavad-gita text all by yourself, but also become a Samskrit speaker and writer.

Surprisingly these courses are mostly run thru volunteer effort.Course materials for one course costs Rs.300/-
