I share with you the feeling of awe that I experienced when the young women presented their vaakyaatha mandanam on nyaya, sahitya and vyakarana.  They proved that they were in no way inferior to men.

The students sitting immediately right (left when we face the stage) to the chair are from the http://www.maitreyeegurukulam.com/

When I asked the two women how many more of their Gurukula reached this level of achievement in Shaastras, they said that currently there were eight such students including themselves. (six more )

The one sitting to the left extreme (right extreme when we face the stage) is Mridula Ashwin , who is on the BVP list. She is currently a research student at the Department of Sanskrit of UoH. She is the first one to express desire to participate in a Vaakyaartha sadas expecting other participants to be men. She has experience of participating in such events of men-women vaakyaartha sadas earlier.

It is indeed heartening to see this and wide publicity needs to be given to this. Maybe this can be worked out as an article and published in the Hindu or any reputed Newspaper to counteract the misconceptions of people like Ananya Vajpeyi. Since Ananya did write some derogatory remarks in the Hindu that would be the appropriate forum according to me; Jayaraman why don't you think about it since you were very much present at this venue.

Amazing videos, Nagaraj Ji.  Thanks for sharing.  Certainly during my student days in Pune, women were among the leading young scholars of Sanskrit, several of them were senior to me by a few years, and many were my contemporaries.  Many ladies from the University of Pune won at the Sanskrit debate competitions in Ujjain and elsewhere.  Glad to see this rising generation of Women Sanskrit scholars today.  With best regards,

I wonder if you know that the first महिला to recite vedic सूक्त in a सदस् held in 1962 came from Pune.I don't know if any other महिला did it before.Even this महिला was not allowed and was criticised. Some pandit left the सदस् in protest.

Vedic chanting is restricted by Dharma Shastra rules. If we want we can break or bend the rules. No God or court will question us. But the rule is nobody without undergoing Upanayana should chant Vedas. It is not about being a man or woman. And a Patita person like not doing Sandhyavandana for a long time, being in impure state like Asoucha because of death or birth in family or having vices should not chant also.

Sir,

My intention is to point out with Veda chanting we have to be careful. Other things like speaking Sanskrit and discussions can take place by everybody. It is nice to encourage everybody. With no Upanayana Samskara and no Guru Upadesha how can some person chant Vedas? That is why Veda Vyasa made Puranas and Geeta. It for benefiting people even with no Upanayana Samskara. They can also get the SAME benefit like a person studying Vedas. They will not get anything less.

All three Acharyas Sankara, Ramanuja and Madhva have said the same thing about Vedic study in Brahma Sutras Bhashyas.

Sir,

It is perfectly fine to share your observations. I think, you responded in particular to Madam Saroja Bhate ji's remark on a woman scholar reciting a Veda sukta, in a sadas, firstly from Pune in '62.

There is much more to motivate, achieve and establish in connection with women scholars participating in sabhas/shastradhyayana. The current thread is pointer in that direction.

Hence, you are requested to port your views to a new thread for churning the same.

Respected scholars,

I thank the entire galaxy of scholars on this list and also those who were personally available when the MahilA VAkyArtha Sadas happened, for their heartfelt blessings and words of encouragement.
To be frank, my entry into a serious learning of sanskrit and shAstras happened only when I joined for MA VyAkaraNa at Sree Sankaracharya Universsity of Sanskrit, Kalady, in 2017. I was immensely fortunate to study under Prof Ch Satyanarana Sastry, who, seeing my zeal in the subject, took out much of his non-office hours, on weekdays and weekends to teach me various portions from the SiddhAnta Kaumudi, Sekharas, LaghumanjushA and BhUshanasAra. I must confess that he was the one who motivated and trained each and every interested student to take part in Vakyarthas that happen in every nook and corner of Kerala, and still does so. In this context, it should be highlighted that students and scholars from all communities, men and women, who are well versed in their respective shAstras participate in such shAstra sabhas. Thus it happened that, upon coming to know of a VAkyArtha to be organized at the BVP conference, I contacted Prof Pandurangi, and the rest followed.

From 2016, I also started studying from Prof Korada Subrahmaniam, whose versatility in all the 14 Vidyasthanas is unparalleled, due to which I have a clear basic idea of Nyaya, Mimamsa, Vedanta, and Dharmashastras, apart from VyAkaraNa. I offer all the credits of where I stand now, unto him.

At present, I am pursuing research towards a PhD under the supervision of Prof JSR Prasad, and co-supervision of Prof Korada Subrahmanyam.

Thanks and regards,

If yes, then I feel happy to have worked for Bvp. At least it has helped one person to become a good scholar. It is inspiring, yes. But this is a rare thing that it happened actually.

Aayushmati,

I am travelling. Could not quickly respond. The Mahila Vakyartha sadas was not planned in advance. That is why it was not announced in advance. That is why Mridula wanted to participate in a men's vaakyaartha only. But when we found more women available, we organised the all women one.

I know that you would have loved to take part in the all women vaakyaartha sadas. You are one of the finest vyaakarana scholars of this young generation.

Let us have more of these. We will look forward to your participation next time.

Madam, Namaste.
I feel all the more responsible and duty-bound towards the cause of Sanskrit and ShAstras, by receiving adulation from such eminent scholars as you. Thank you so much, although I must admit, that the students of Maitreyee Gurukulam, who quoted many Vedic sUktas and mantras during the course of their vAkyArtha, and another Navya NyAya scholar sitting right next to the adhyakshA on her left in the sabhA, whose fluency in the Navya NyAya terminologies was awe-inspiring, deserve wider recognition than me.

Kum Sangeetha Ramesh, seated next to the adhyakshaa on her left, teaches in KSU. I spoke to her and she told me that she has been  teaching various subjects there, but not formally appointed as a regular faculty yet. She had come to Udupi with her sister and the latter's child. Sangeetha was clad in Madhva style kacche sari. She told me there is some subtle difference in the way it is worn by married and unmarried women.

If I remember correctly, she spoke on ten types of shaabda bodha.

She is Sangeeta her father being Ramesh. She studied nyaya in chamarajendra Samskrit college (constituent college of KSU). She too got Gold medal in nyaya. She is PhD student of KSU under the supervision of prof Tirumala kulakrni. Now she informally teaches some students in CSC not KSU. She too got prepared for nyaya vakyartha in a short notice. Other participants too got prepared in a very short notice, thanks to Umamaheshwar, Sringeri.
