Greetings from the Department of Philosophy - Manipal!

Given the human-made and natural challenges of the universe, not only have our ways of living and interacting changed, but these have also presented us with various human responses and experiences that reveal what it is to be human. The study of philosophy, language and literature is firmly concerned with the realm of human experience and existence – ways of living, thinking, and acting. Their core intellectual endeavour consists of bringing forth the knowledge of self and the world.

In this regard, the Department of Philosophy – Manipal conducts teaching and research activities in the areas of Humanities and Social Sciences through academic programs, projects, publications, and events. The department offers PhD and PG programs, such as an MA in Indian Philosophy and an MA in Sanskrit Studies. The Department, with a diverse group of national and international students and faculty, would offer a profound academic experience for prospective PhD and PG applicants to engage in a journey of intellectual discovery and contribute to the global discourse on philosophy.

1)      The PhD doctoral research program (with select scholarships for full-time applicants) promises a rigorous academic experience and a transformative intellectual journey that contributes to the global dialogue on the fundamental questions that define human existence. The institutional commitment to fostering a vibrant intellectual community ensures that candidates have access to resources, seminars, and conferences that facilitate academic growth and the exchange of ideas.

2)      The two-year Master’s in Indian Philosophy involves critical and interdisciplinary engagements with Indian and Western philosophy. The program introduces philosophising as a skill set that students can adopt in their approach to studying other academic fields (future studies/research), as an acquired life skill, and as a professional competence needed for varied career pursuits. The combination of Sanskrit and English language-based teaching equips students with the interpretive tools necessary for understanding philosophical texts and contexts.

3)      The two-year Master’s in Sanskrit Studies provides an opportunity to acquire proficiency in the Sanskrit language and understand it as a broadly deployed medium of intellectual, literary, artistic, and religious expression in India. The course will primarily include text-critical engagements with different genres of Indian thought in Sanskrit – philosophy, literature, and Hermeneutics, while also seeking to retrace and reconstruct the intellectual history of India.

These programs are designed to accommodate students from diverse academic backgrounds and offer ample exposure to various philosophical and literary themes.
