Namaskar to all,

The Yoga Danda is a T-shaped wooden stick used by yoga practitioners to balance nostril-dominance in pranayama practice. Photos below:

In order for it to be properly useful, it has to be custom-made according to the exact sitting height of the practitioner concerned.

There are some commercially available ones in India, but they come in standard sizes which reduce their utility. I have spoken to a few, and they do not do custom pieces.

Now, this is a long shot, but do you know of any manufacturers in India who manufacture yoga dandas to custom specifications? In or around Hyderabad, preferably?

And the last alternative is to engage a carpenter locally, of course.

Any guidance would be gratefully received.

with kind regards
Harsha

That is the only and the best way.

Dear Shri Harshaji:

Thank you for the information about Yogadanda.

Swara shastra clearly indicates that continued flow of swara in one nostril can result in disease or worse. So please bear that caution in mind.

I hope you have someone to guide you in this space and you are not on some personal unsupervised quest (these usually don't end well).
As for the danda itself buy any that is slightly smaller than required and you can adjust the required height by placing a cloth under or on top of the staff as required.

Respected sir please visit once the YOGADA SATSANG SOCIETY near you. Once I saw they are using these type of dandas with the screw facility by which increase and decrease of the size happens.
        Thanking you

 RESPECTED SCHOLARS ,
Please specify whether the "YOGADANDA" or "BRAHMA DANDA" is signified in scriptures.  How its different from the Dandas which are specified for the VARNASRAM people . Like PALASA DANDA for a BRAHMIN BRAHMACHARIS, etc which are specified in smritis .

The Yoga Spine – Brahma Danda

In yoga the spinal column is referred to as brahma danda (the yoga spine), which literally means ‘the walking stick of God’.

Dear Ken P,
As a scholarly protocol, would you mind sharing your full name in a post?
Sorry for asking.
Merry Christmas.

Thank you sir. Your suggestion is quite sensible and practical.

Also, please be assured I do not plan on doing anything unsanctioned, unscientific or unwarranted.

with regards
Harsha

Sri MVSSP,

Per my understanding, yoga danda is simply a prop designed to assist in the actual practice of pranayama. It is very practical thing, like the yoga patta for example, which is a strip of cloth used to keep the legs in place during extended asana practice.

thanks
Harsha
