Dear list

The Hindu Dharma Kosha, a Hindi book by Ramdas Gaur, has a section on Narasimha Sampradaya. Klaus K. Klostermaier in his Survey of Hinduism (2010, SUNY Press, ISBN 9780791480113, p. 307) also refers to this section by Gaur.

The book by Gaur has only a snippet view availbale on Google Books (https://books.google.co.in/books?id=mbYoAAAAYAAJ). I would be obliged if anybody can help with references on Narasimha Sampradaya or the section on it by Gaur in his book.

Thanks, Nityananda

Misraji,

Hindutva by Ramdas Gaur is available at http://www.dli.ernet.in/handle/2015/347397
The entry on Narasimha Sampradaya is on page 733.

FYI - There is an article on Narasimha cult by DC Sircar in Satkari Mookerji Felicitation volume, pages 42-44. This volume is  available online at http://www.new.dli.ernet.in/handle/2015/408016

regards
shankara

I'm not able to open the links to the DLI archives for the book by Ramadas Gaur and the article by DC Sircar (the gateway connection always times out).

It seems to me that a passing mention to a Narasimha Sampradaya could actually be a reference to the Datta Sampradaya in Maharashtra and Karnataka, where the name of a 14th-15th century guru named Narasimha Sarasvati of Ganagapura stands tall.

The Srigurucaritra of Gangadhara Sarasvati, written originally in Marathi, and translated to Sanskrit in the late 19th century, is an account of his life, which is often recited by adherents of the Datta sampradaya.

Best regards,
Vidyasankar

There is also a strong presence of Narasimha worship in Maharashtra centered in such popular places like Nira Narasinghpur, with a temple of Narasimha on the banks of the river Nīrā.  This Narasimha is the Kuladaivata of my family who comes from the nearby town of Tembhurni, close to Solapur in Maharashtra.

One interesting feature of the Narasimha Kshetras of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh is almost all of them are on hills. Each of them has a name alternative to its famous name. This alternative name in almost all cases begins with the word Veda. Names are Vedaadri, Vedaachalam, Vedagiri etc.

The famous Kshetra being developed on a grand scale by the present government of Telangana is known as Yaadagirigutta (Yadagirigutta). In fact, that is a rural pronunciation of Vedagirigutta only. Vedagiri +guTTa. guTTa =hill.
