Could anyone please tell the 10 diśās (directions) in Saṁskr̥tam? I know the generic Saṁskr̥ta names of only 4 cardinal directions but about the names of ordinal directions, zenith and nadir, I don't know. I searched online, but only wikipedia seemed to have information on it.
East, Pūrva, Prācī, Prāk
West, Paścima, Pratīcī, Aparā
North, Uttara, Udīcī
South, Dakṣīṇa, Avāchip
North-East, Īśānya
South-East, Āgneya
North-West, Vāyavya
South-West, Nairr̥ti
Zenith, Ūrdhvā
Nadir,Adhaḥ
But this is not reliable as wikipedia gives no proper source to check. The only hint is through the names of the dikpālas, and it seems the names of ordinal directions have been derived from the names of their corresponding
dikpālas. Like Nairr̥ti from Nirr̥ti, Āgneya from Agni, Vāyavya from Vāyu and Īśānya from Īśāna.
Could anyone please help me, if these are genuine and proper derivations? And in which reliable text (can be a śāstra) can we find the names of the dikpālas and their directions?
