Here is a very useful online Sanskrit <=> English and Telugu dictionary search service that aggregates and searches through all the major dictionaries.  The best part is we can search for Sanskrit words in Telugu dictionary itself because they have linked up the Vavilla Sanskrit-Telugu dictionary and also given that vast vocabulary of Telugu is actually derived from Sanskrit, the meanings for Sanskrit words can be found in Telugu dictionaries.

I found this of immense help to lovers of both Sanskrit and Telugu languages whenever difficult words are encountered. Ever since i chanced upon this website, i almost stopped referring to Sanskrit-English dictionaries and finding the authentic meanings of sanskrit words in Telugu dictionaries written by authoritative pandits of the past. Thought of sharing with you all so that you too may be benefited.

Regards,

Subrahmanyam

I have been using this portal for the past 5 years. This is a marvellous contribution by "Andhra Bharati". Apart from more than 50 Telugu-Telugu and Telugu-English and 3 rare Urdu-Telugu dictionaries, this portal has several Sanskrit-English dictionaries including Monier Williams, Cappeller, Apte etc. Work is progress to include
sabdakalpadruma, vacaspatya etc. Sanskrit nyayas are also available here.

A great facility to all Sanskrit learners and lovers of Sanskrit, Telugu and Urdu.

As good amount of Telugu vocabulary is derived from Sanskrit and also the inclusion of Vavilla Sanskrit-Telugu dictionary in the Telugu dictionary category, one can find meanings of Sanskrit words in Telugu dictionary category itself. I am finding this unstated feature of Andhrabharati particularly useful.

Sri Subrahmanyam-garu,

In your first mil you mentioned

given that vast vocabulary of Telugu is actually derived from Sanskrit,

the meanings for Sanskrit words can be found in Telugu dictionaries.

In the latest one also you are repeating

As good amount of Telugu vocabulary is derived from Sanskrit ...... one can find meanings of Sanskrit words in Telugu dictionary category itself.

While it is true that Telugu (like many Indian languages including Tamil) has a very big amount of words having origin in Sanskrit, such words have a very big amount of semantic change and as such, a meaning in Telugu dictionary for a Sanskrit derived Telugu word may not always be useful for a general Sanskrit user.

Namaste Nagaraj mahodaya,

As it is not intuitive for people to search for Sanskrit words in Telugu dictionary, I had emphasized this unstated feature for two reasons:

1.  The "Vavilla Sanskrit-Telugu Nighantuvu (year 1943)" was included in Andhrabharati website in Telugu dictionaries category (probably because the original was in Telugu script but not Devanagari). Due to this, one cannot make use of it in Sanskrit dictionary category. Similarly, "Samskruta Nyayamulu (1939)" is also available in Telugu dictionary category only.

2. Coming to your point... I agree that some Sanskrit words adopted in Telugu have a slightly different meaning as compared to original Sanskrit words (for example, "Tatha" in Telugu means grand father while it means father in Sanskrit, also "Alasyam" in Telugu means delay/late while in Sanskrit it means Laziness)... That said, i would call these as just exceptions and i think their number will be much smaller compared to the number of words where the meanings are same both in Sanskrit and Telugu. So, i feel, there is merit in looking up Sanskrit words in one's own native language dictionaries where one can get clearer meanings as compared to Sanskrit-English dictionaries, most of which are authored by foreign writers except for the Apte one.

Moreover, i would like to highlight the scholarship of the ancient Indian dictionary authors. If we lookup a few Sanskrit words where the meanings are somewhat different in Telugu, the authors have listed all the possible meanings of the given word and also called out the differences between Sanskrit and Telugu meanings for readers' attention. Kudos to them!

Regards,
Subbu
