Decades ago, I used to hear this deśa-bhakti (patriotic) song in Gujarat:
“હો રાજ મને લાગ્યો કસુંબી નો રંગ …
“हो राज मने लाग्यो कसुंबी नो रंग …
“Ho rāj mane lāgyo kasuṃbī no raṃg …”

What does કસુંબી (kasuṃbī) mean here?  What does કસુંબી નો રંગ (kasuṃbī no raṃg = color of kasuṃbī) symbolize?  By the way, what is the real color of kasuṃbī?

What does this line really mean: “મારી જનની ના હૈયા માં પોઢંતા પોઢંતા પીધો કસુંબી નો રંગ  (मारी जननी ना हैया मां पोढंता पोढंता पीधो कसुंबी नो रंग Mārī jananī nā haiyā māṃ poḍhantā poḍhantā pīdho kasuṃbī no raṃg )”?  What does it signify?

Shri Radhakrishna ji,

I too have heard this song by Shri Jhaverchand Meghani a well known Gujarati poet and social reformer. Earlier, I had this curiosity to know about the exact meaning of Kasumbi, but never got the correct or satisfactory answer to it, so lived with the assumption of it being indicating the spirit of bravery, valour, etc. With your post, I too am eager to gain some knowledge about it.

I could find a link to a chapter on someone's work here (also attaching the same PDF) but it's only part of it, below is relevant excerpt,

"Kasumbee- no Rang” eulogizes the hue of opium intoxicant that deepens as the liquid condenses during the grinding process. Regarded as the elixir of life, the hue indicates the colour of life with all feelings poured in it and symbolizes the integrated and proud human existance rather than mere survival at any cost.

Regards,
Sunil

I am a Gujarati, and I am as lost as others here.

Dictionary entry at Bhagavadgomandal here confirms it to be 'kusumbha'. It also refers to red color. A related word કસુંબો refers to opium preparation consumption. It occurs regularly in Charani literature.

It is indeed a color, saffron, etc. shade.  There is a composition on Shankaracharya: कुसुम्भवाससावृतं विभूतिभासिफालकं नताघनाशने रतं नमामि शङ्करं गुरुम् ॥ १॥  (One clad in saffron robe).

A verse occurring in the narrations of Paṇḍita-rāja Jagannātha’s life :
iyaṁ sustanī mastaka-nyasta-mumbhā kusumbhāruṇaṁ cāru cailaṁ dadhānā /
samastasya lokasya cetaḥ-pravṛttiṁ gṛhītvā ghaṭe nyasya yātīva bhāti //

Kasumbi is orange coloured flower-PALASH flower.Extract of the flower is used to dye a cloth, as it cannot be removed by any other colour nor it is faded.
the poet is petriot, his heart is fully coloured with love for mother India. This love is inspired by several people since his birth.  First of all, he is nourished by his mother's milk. That milk filled his body with love for nation. Thereafter, his sister cradled him by singing songs of Rastra-prem.
then he grew up, enemies' attacks filled his heart with valour &patriotism. The freedom fighters, mothers of freedom fighters, &starving beggars also increased his patriotism. His wife also encouraged him. the devotees who  visited   his his place also used to sing songs of Desh-bhakti. In this way now his heart is coloured with love for nation &this colour has become permanent like like that of Kasumbi., no other colour can take its place.
