Dear Colleagues,

I am working on a critical edition and translation of an 18th/19th century text वेदविचार ascribed to someone named शामशास्त्री द्रविड द्विवेदी.  The text discusses disputes among the Vedic Śākhās and Brahmin communities mostly in the region of Maharashtra and attempts to provide arguments to resolve them.  We know practically nothing about the author.  The colophon at the end of the text offers salutations to Tryambakeśvara and the author says he was inspired by Śrī Rāma, which makes me suspect that the author is a resident of the region of Nasik.  The very last line refers to Mahālakṣmī-Ballāḷeśvara.  Is anyone familiar with this region and aware of a temple to these deities?  Here are the final verses of the text:

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Dear Prof. Deshpande,

It appears the dedication statement, श्रीमहालक्ष्मीबल्लाळेश्वरार्पणमस्तु indicates that the Kuladevatas of the author could have been the popular deities of Mahalakshmi of Kolhapur and Ballaleshwar (Ganapati). As you might very well know, families in Maharashtra and Northern Karnataka usually have two deities as Kuladevata - one male and one female. Khandoba is perhaps the most popular Kuladevata, but other deities enjoy their fair share of Kuladevata worship too.

Regards,

Anand

Dear Madhav Deshpande,

My acquaintance from Nashik Shri Kamlakar Ware has confirmed that Shamshastri Dravid is a well known name in Nashik.  He has confirmed that his descendants continue to live in Nashik.  He has assured me that he will let me know their address in a couple of days.

With regards,
Achyut Karve.

Dear Deshpande Sir

Namaskar

In my view the first Traymbakeswara is the gram devata i.e. Nashik or Traymbakeshwar.
Secondly, may be he was the Shreeram devotee of Shreeram and thirdly it seems that shriMahalaxmi and Ballaleshwara are Kuldevatas.
Thanks and Regards
Ashwini zambre

Ballaleshwar (Ganapati), one of the Ashta Vinayak, is located at Pali, Raigadh , 121 km from Pune ,93.6 km from Mumbai.

Nashik to Pali Ganapati , Ballaleshwar is 104 km.

Though Nashik to Kolhapur is 450 km, to have Kolhapur Mahalakshmi as Kuladevata (=family deity) , usually distance does not count.

Many चित्पावन / चित्तपावन families have योगेश्वरी of अंबेजोगाई as कुलदेवता and व्याडेश्वरः of गुहागर as कुलदैवतम्, distance between the two places being 456 km. Now at a place near Karjat, one family has temples of both deities at one place.

Dear Madhav Deshpande,

I will get the address and phone NOS of the descendants of Shamshastri Dravid in a couple of days.  The relevant information that I received today from my source is that Shamshastri Dravid has prefaced the book.  The book has not been written by him.

With regards,
Achyut Karve.

Dear Shri Karve,

Thank you for trying to get information regarding the descendants of Shamshastri Dravid.  Three manuscripts of Vedavicāra and the edition printed in Vai in 1912 all uniformly contain the colophon:  इति श्रीमद्द्विवेदिद्रविडशामशास्त्रिविरचितं वेदविचारप्रकरणं संपूर्णतामगमत् तेन परमात्मा श्रीरामः सुप्रसन्नो वरदो भवतु श्रीमहालक्ष्मीबल्लाळेश्वरार्पणमस्तु । This makes it clear that he is the author of this text.  The text is also cited with his name in some other sources.  The text must have been composed sometime before 1912, when the Vai edition appeared.  The three manuscripts I have do not give any date.

Dear Madhav Deshpande,

I do not know but that was the input I got.  Let us see.  Further details are awaited.  More details will emerge when direct contact with his descendants is established.

With regards,
Achyut Karve.
