Reference Required.

Dear Scholars,
Namaste.

श्लोकार्धेन प्रवक्ष्यामि यदुक्तं ग्रन्थकोटिभि:
ब्रह्म सत्यं जगन्मिथ्या जीवो ब्रह्मैव नापर:

I want to have the reference to the above verse. Can anyone help me? I
searched the net, but, the reference I could not find.

Not sure if it helps but I saw this post by RKM Delhi on Facebook today.

"The philosophy of Advaita Vedanta has been condensed in this sloka from the Baalabodhini, attributed to Sri Sankaracharya:

slokärdhena pravakshyämi yad-uktam granthakotibhih |
brahma satyam jagan-mithyä jivo brahmaiva näparah ||

‘With half a shloka I will declare what has been said in thousands of volumes: Brahman is real, the world is false, the soul is only Brahman, nothing else.’"

There are two versions of this sloka. The Exact version agreeing with the enquiry is not readily available with me. But I can surely give that reference also very soon. Now I would like to place on record one available reference with slight text variation as in the following manner.

ब्रह्म सत्यं जगन्मिथ्या जीवो ब्रह्मैव नापर:।

अनेन वेद्यं सच्छास्त्रमिति वेदान्तडिण्डिम:॥

              - ब्रह्मज्ञानावलीमाला २० तमश्लोक: P.31 

This is as found in the श्रीमच्छङ्कराचार्यविरचितप्रकरणग्रन्थसङ्ग्रह: of The Stotra Works of Sri Sankaracharya published Oriental Book Agency, Pune in 1939.

Soon I shall try to give the other reference also. I hope this may be of some help.

The first half of the verse is found with a different half verse:

परोपकारः पुण्याय पापाय परपीडनम् ॥

I don't think this verse can be attributed to Sri Shankaraachaarya. I gather that this verse appears in a work titled 'advaita dindima' of a much later day writer in the advaita tradition.

There are all kinds of permutations and combinations of various first halves and second halves in various places:

 

श्लोकार्धेन प्रवक्ष्यामि यदुक्तं ग्रन्थकोटिभि:
ब्रह्म सत्यं जगन्मिथ्या जीवो ब्रह्मैव नापर:

                               

अष्टादशपुराणेषु व्यासस्य वचनद्वयम् ।

परोपकारः पुण्याय पापाय परपीडनम् ॥ इति ।

 

श्लोकार्धेन प्रवक्ष्यामि यदुक्तं ग्रन्थकोटिभिः ।
परोपकारः पुण्याय पापाय परपीडनम् ॥

अष्टादशपुराणानां सारं व्यासेन कीर्तितम्।

परोपकारः पुण्याय पापाय परपीडनम्॥

परोपकारः पुण्याय पापाय परपीडनम् ।

एतत्विद्यात्समासेन लक्षणं पुण्यपापयोः

 

But aadaraNIya Rani Sadasivamurtiji's information is a quite pointed reference information for the version of the verse under question.
