Dear list members
I woke up this morning to the devastating news that Dr Pappu Venugopala Rao, a prolific scholar of Telugu and Sanskrit and one of the foremost exponents of Nāṭyaśāstra of our times, passed away late last night in Chennai. It is a deep personal loss for me as I interacted with him over countless emails, phone calls and video calls during the previous 18 months discussing many fine aspects of the Nāṭyaśāstra and other texts of dramatics. Like a father figure, he patiently answered all my questions on the Nāṭyaśāstra with meticulous details and inexhaustible energy. Just this Saturday, I had asked him a question on chapter 32 of the Nāṭyaśāstra. As he was travelling, he said he would get back to me by Sunday night or Monday morning. Bhagavān had other plans and the question will remain unanswered forever.
Sometime last year, I had composed this verse as a tribute to his scholarship in Nāṭyaśāstra—
ब्रह्मदेवसमारम्भां भरताचार्यमध्यमाम्।
वेणुगोपालपर्यन्तां वन्दे नाट्यपरम्पराम्॥
brahmadevasamārambhāṃ bharatācāryamadhyamām
veṇugopālaparyantāṃ vande nāṭyaparamparām
“I salute the Nāṭya tradition, which has Brahmā-deva at its beginning, which has preceptors like Bharata in the middle, and which extends till [Dr. Pappu] Veṇugopāla [Rao].”
