Dear Sri KN Ramesh & Dear Members;

I found the attached image at http://knramesh.blogspot.in/2012/08/

Please let me know where this icon is located. Is it worshiped in any temple or household?
It appears to be a pancha-loha casting. Or is it just a computer animation? Please provide details.

Regards
RN Iyengar

There is no link provided.

Browsing for the combination of the words bryan hill and shimshumara is taking us to pages one of which is an xml file that does not open easily.

Its intro has:

I have done a reasonably wide literature and Google search before posting my query. The picture is also at

and Sritattvanidhi has the following picture. Since I am investigating the archaeoastronomy of Shishumara constellation starting from the Svadhyaaya Brahmana right up to present day I am curious about the three dimensional icon of dhruva in Shishumara= shimshumara ( as per SayaNa Bhashya on RV I mandala)

    Namaskar,

FYI, Google provides a way to Search by Image, you may give it a try.

I've tried it and most results have same image without any reference to origin, e.g.

The following link from a book website shows very similar image. I guess either this image is taken from the same source (vigraha) of which that blog post image was taken, or they both are same image with some digital modification.

What may interest you could be this link in Russian. This website has almost the same image as you posted, but since it mostly contains the self-taken pictures in and around the temples, probability is more to get to the root of it.

Here is the translation of the paragraph adjoining the image, from Russian to English!

This other of the sacred relics It depicts the Lord, manifested above the head in the form of a starry sky. This is the name of Shishumara. The tail of the Lord here symbolically depicts the Milky Way and the Polar Star on which Dhruva Maharaja, with the folded hands, is seated, the great devotee of Lord Vishnu. The Bolstess is sculpted from a single piece of red coral

    Best Luck.

    Dhanyoshmi,
    Sunil

    Dear Sri Sunil,
Thanks for this information. It is very interesting and useful. I received a private mail also with similar information about the wide prevalence of this icon in the Madhwa-sampradaaya. I received a photo of a pooja performance in the Uttaraadi Mutt also. The Russian blog mentions about an icon sculpted out of coral. The icon in the Uttaradi Mutt seems to be a metal casting. The legends about Dhruva (Maharaja) etc may differ from region to region and PuraNa to PuraaNa.  But the Upaasana of Shishumaara with Dhruva at the tail-end  is reminiscent of the  original Tai. AraNyaka mantra. The observation of the Shishumaara constellation must have created a deep spiritual and mystical impression on the Hindu mind c 3000 BC to have preserved an unbroken tradition to the present day albeit with turns and twists.
    Thanks
    RN Iyengar

This icon if I am not mistaken is one amongst the hundreds of 'Archa Pratimas' worshipped in Uttaradi Mutt. I am basing my assumption on the cover-design of a book called 'श्रीकृष्णामृतमहारणवः' by Bhagavtpada Madhvacharya, published by Uttaradi Mutt, which has this Photo. Shimshumara rupa is the Scorpion shaped rupa of Vishnu which is the controller of Dhruva-Loka.

there is a misconception that shimshumara rupa is scorpion, please look at the deity closely, it has scales on its body. Scorpions do not have scales on their body.
    It is actually Gangetic Dolphin
Refer to the Zoological dictionaries by Dr. Tirumalacharya. Here he quotes RV and TS as proof for it (but actual verses not given). He has says "shimshum marayati iti shimshumaraha". This books is treat for zoologists who also know samskrita knowledge. Its a great book and I salute him for the work
I am trying to find what is the meaning of shimshum. learned people please help here.
