Detailed study/commentary of Aditya Hridayam

Is there any study of the Aditya Hridayam or a traditional commentary on the text?

Subbuji,

There are several versions of Adityahridayastotra of which 2 are most popular - the short version with 31 verses from Valmiki Ramayana and a longer version with 170 verses from Bhavishyottara Purana.

The Arsha version from Valmiki Ramayana, Yuddhakanda, chapter 105 has several commentaries. PFA Adityahridaya with 3 commentaries Tilaka, Bhushana and Siromani.

The well known meaning of the word ‘Aditya’ is the Sun. Hridayam means the heart. ‘The Heart of Aditya’ means the real significance or meaning behind the worship of Sun or the meditation on Sun God.

Aditya-hridayam is seen in the sarga 105 of Yuddha kanda of Valmiki Ramayana. It contains 31 shlokas. The context of the shloka is – Sage Agastya initiates Rama through this sanatana-mantra and Rama attained victory over Ravana after doing this worship.

This set of shlokas is viewed as an independent text and millions of devotees recite it every day. This stotra is usually taught to children and students for health, success and achievement in life.. (आरोग्यं भास्कारादिच्छेत्)

Apart from the Bhaava, many commentators have written philosophical level commentaries on Adityahridayam.

A free, 9-day webinar course on the auspicious occasion of Vasanta-Navaratri, in which Vyoma Sanskrit Brothers (Shri. Venkatasubramanian and Shri. Viswanathan) taught the chanting of Adityahridaya stotram and explored the bhavartha of the verses.

Subject Matter – Chanting of the Aditya Hridaya verses, followed by a discourse in English on the import of verses.
